Need a little help on picking and finding the right exhaust for my 08 XLT 4.0L V6. In need of some more horsepower and would like better sound also. Ive read previous messages on exhausts and researched them and found on some websites they dont offer exhaust systems and/or mufflers for my year or model. Need the best bang for the buck as times are tight. Any help will be appreciated.

If money is tight, you're pretty much throwing away money if you want more performance out of the V6 by changing the exhaust. The best you can really hope for by just changing the exhaust is a better sound.

For performance (and fuel efficiency) gains you'll actually notice, clean your MAF, IAC valve and throttle body if you haven't already.

Thanks for the advice Hugh. Not to stir the pot but i was told by numerous people in the auto field that replacing the exhaust will absolutely help performance, even on my V6 Sport Trac and i just have to find the right one for me. Money is tight but not deathly tight and willing to spend a few hundred or so.

It'll help, but not really much that you'll notice. To really get the best bang for your buck, search for Jerry's thread about his exhaust. You'll want to get the Y-pipe, a high flow muffler and remove the resonator. I'm missing some details I'm sure. You may pick up some low end torque but also sacrifice some top end horsepower because of the larger pipes. These engines need the back pressure from the 2.25" pipes, IMO.

I replaced my stock muffler with a Dynomax Super Turbo and noticed a little better throttle response but that's about all I could get myself to "feel." I probably made that up, too. It does sound better, though and I'm sure it loosened up a little power by losing the very restrictive stock muffler.

Free flowing exhast will loose low end torque, only if your pipes are too large. Not gain.

You will gain wot HP with free flow. I think the only company making a complete kit is Gibson.

If you have someone build from cat back you can go up to 2 1/2" pipe. With HP gain and no torque loss. with a baffle type performance muffler.

The y-pipe Hugh refered to is only available for the '01 to '05 trac, gen1.

IMO For cost savings and about as good as the gen2 4.0L, will get. You can stay with the OEM 2 1/4" pipes. Cut the oem resonator and muffler out. Then weld in a magnaflow muffler. It is a SS straight thru design. Shop around, $60 to $80. Will be good with the OEM 2 1/4" pipe. Weld a nice SS tip on the end. You will maintain good low end torque and gain HP. Might cost $40 for a shop to patch it in.

A complete factory cat back, $250 and more.

Oops, had that backward. Thanks Eddie.

I also didn't even pay attention that he has a Gen2.
