extra battery?

We are heading for the Maze section of Canyonlands National Park. David Day in his guidebook recommends a piece of foam rubber under the battery to cushion it from shocks, and he also suggests a spare battery. Good advice or overkill? We'll be doing the Flint Trail to the Green River which is not as rough as other sections, we understand.

While I don't think it is necessary if you had one would not need it and if you don't have it you would and if you needed to weld two are needed.
