Darin, you must drive like a grandpa. The speed limit is 75 on the Kilpatrick Turnpike, and you know everyone has to go at least 5 mph above the limit at all times!

At least the 21 cent gas tax will pass. You know that no one wants a chuck of concrete to fall off a bridge and kill their mom, like happened to the guy on the commercials. We all know that once all the tolls and the extra gas tax money gets put towards the road work, we'll have the best highways in the country.

Of course, the construction will take several hundred years if it progresses at the rate that the I-35 road repairs have been going.

You would not believe some of the things we have to go through when we try to repair or rebuild a road. First we either have to make a new section of road to move everyone over to, or only work from 9AM to 3PM on one lane at a time. And then when we dig up the road to repair it, the things that come up range from the expected to the totally ridiculous. We actually found a natural gas pipeline in the bore hole of a 60" auger that was drilling the foundation for a new bridge pier. The gas company claimed it wasn't theirs for a week or more, then sheepishly admitted that it was theirs. They only they had to go back 18 years in the construction notes (nothing on any of their drawings) to find any indication of it! And the water company flat stopped us for 8 weeks when a planned shutdown and relocation of a waterline suddenly wasn't possible. We wound up redesigning the bridge foundation AGAIN! And 300 something thousand volt powerlines that had to be raised to clear the new bridge and traffic were finally moved 15 months late, or 3 months after the original end of the project!

We would love to finish before the original end of the project and go on to other jobs. It's just so rare that we actually can.

I believe it. I am a program manager for Air Force Communications projects. We dig up all sorts of things when new cables are being put into the ground. The scariest one was a high pressure, 18" fuel line that was hit by a backhoe in Korea. The drawings showed that the pipeline ran on the OTHER side of the building nearby! Fortunately, the pipe was not damaged.

Nelson: Negative on speed limit on Kilpatrick... it's 70mph. You must be thinking of the Turner or HE Bailey Turnpikes.

And yes, I grandpa drive at the posted speed limit or even less in the right lane. They can pass me if they don't like it! :)
