Good info Gary. Thanks........:supercool:

Some 9v batteries used to come with plastic protectors. I would put them on the old battery in the swap out. They need to bring those caps back.

Good Info !

This especially applies to the 9 Volt batteries used in smoke detectors because most people replace them on an annual basis, and there may still be significant power left in the battery. Most other batteries like D, C, AA, and AAA batteries have terminals at each end of the battery and less likely to short out, as well as they are typically used until they are dead, and so they have little if any power left in them when they are replaced.

I think this might also apply to other types of batteries like Cell phone or old laptop batteries....We replace them when they don't hold a charge very long, but they still have power, and the terminals are usually next to each other where they can be easily shorted out.

Gary, Thanks for sharing this tip. I will definetely be more carefull of how I dispose of my batteries.

Thanks--good info!

Just curious--do any of you know why smoke detectors continue to use 9V? It seems like everything else in the world has switched to AA or AAA--smoke detectors are the only thing I can think of which continue to use 9V. The only other thing I can think of which uses a 9V in my house is some of the old Mattel and Coleco handheld games from the 80s that we occasionally pull out for nastalgia's sake.

Another question--I understand how 9V batteries are more likely to short out with just one battery because of the terminal proximity. But what about other batteries--AAA, AA, C, D--Can't they nearly as easily short out end-to-end when you have, for example, numerous batteries loose together in a bag?

Bill V,

I agree...Why are they still selling 9Volt batteries like that??? My new house has smoke detectors that use the 9 volt batteries....I just throw them in the trash and never gave it a second thought?

I think other battries are safer because it's more unlikely that another battery or anything will be able to contacted both ends of the battery to create a short. The 9 volt battery terminals are both on the top and within about 1/2 inch of each other....That's why they are more dangerous.
