Love bugs sound to me to be that same as May flies. Come out in May & Sept / Oct.

They come out of the water in droves and only live for about 2 days then die. In WI, they use snow plows to clear the streets of them and then dump them back into the rivers from which they rose.

The lovebug, Plecia nearctica, is a member of the family of march flies. It is also known as the honeymoon fly, telephonebug, kissybug or double-headedbug. The adult is a small, flying insect common to parts of Central America and the southeastern United States, especially along the Gulf Coast.

Bill, its two little flies seeming attached that appear in spring and fall all over central Florida. When you drive along at 60 or 70 mph. hundreds attach them selves to the front of your car. Not much of a problem within the city, but on rural roads and the turnpike. Makes for a real mess.

May flies are not the same as lovebugs.

As far as splats on vehicles the may flies sound like a PITA as well. Hate scrubbing lovebug carcasses off my vehicles. They really do bake on there from the sun.

Florida native originally from FTL now living in Tallahassee here and yes, love bugs are every bit as bad as others have implied.

They're slow-moving, present in very high numbers in the summer and incredibly juicy when you hit them on the highway. The rest stops along the Florida Turnpike actually have stations with a high-pressure water nozzle that you drive up to to rinse the bugs from your windshield so you can see again.

If you get them off the car quickly, they're not too bad. If you let them bake in the sun, whoa nelly. It's a bad scene.
