Can the phone holder part be removed from the mount? I was thinking if I could put my xm radio mount on it instead I would be interested.

Yes. The phone holder is connected by four screws. You can see the screw holes for the phone mount in the pictures above. Just remove it and attach your radio mount via the four screw holes, or with double-sided tape.
