Greetings! What is your opinion of Ford Ranger? I am thinking of giving my 2003 Sport Trac 4x2 XLT to my daughter (now 14) in two years time and buy a Ranger 4x2 super cab for myself. ST has side curtain bags for safety. By that time I would be retired. Will there be a new Ford Ranger model by that time? With thanks.

I bought a new 2000 Ranger extended cab, 4x4, 4.0, 5 speed manual. It was a good truck. Sold it to get the ST for the four doors.

Good luck.

I owned a 92 bought new 4 cyl, 5 speed and a 98, lease buy-back at a good price with low miles with 3.0 V6 4x4,,,,,,,both were great trucks, and only replaced the starter in the 98 once. That is what convinced me to buy another Ford product, and like Fred, I got the new ST for pulling reasons, and I love it,,,,,,,,,,just hope it is as :Dworry-free as those Rangers!! Hope that helps in your decision,,,,,later, Mark

keep the ST for you and give her the ranger.....

At 14, it would make more sense to get a safe economic car. Young teens dont have enough driving experiance to handle the trac. I would hate to see her roll it, loaded down with her freinds at that. If she wants a truck, get a ranger for her..JMO..;)

Eddie, my ST was handed to me when I was 16. I started driving it in parking lots when I was 14 (when we bought it). I think people underestimate kids (same as in that college athlete post, they only read about teens in accidents, not teens who have perfect driving records and make the honor roll) I think the ST would be plenty safe for her. It's one of the reasons my parents bought the Trac. We narrowed it down to the ST and a Frontier, and after sitting in and driving both, my parents decided that if I was in a wreck, I'd be more likely to survive in the bulky ST than in the Frontier.

Ford has been wishy washy about the Ranger. I've heard it would be replaced in 2008 with a new truck. Last news I heard was they would keep it around until 2010 with just some minimal changes to give the appearance of freshening them up.

I had two Rangers before the ST. Liked them both. The Ranger religious extremists are at TheRangerStation.com. Guy there has a 2001 Ranger 4-banger with almost 300,000 miles and it hasn't been apart. I've seen it and ridden in it, it's actually in very nice shape. The design is getting a little long in the tooth, but there is nothing wrong with them.

I'd agree with Todd on this one. The Ranger is a step down from an ST, and you'd probably be kicking yourself everyday for handing the keys to your daughter, even if the ST is well used by that point.

That a great little trucks, but don't let anyone fool you, they are entry level autos and suffer from neglect from Ford. The Ranger that's out now is the same sine 1983 at a frame level, and 1995 from an interior level, and 1998 from a cab and suspension level.

The future of the Ranger is quite uncertian. There was supposed to be a new one for '04, then '06, now '08 or '10. No one really knows if it'll stick around or be replaced by a new, larger, 'compact' truck.

The Ranger in North America will cease production at the Twin Cities Assembly Plant in Aug. 2007. (2008MY will be the last Ranger.) The new Ranger has been launched for Asia/Pacific, manufactured in Thailand. Segment for compact pickup in NA is declining.

Gotta go with everyone else on this one,Sport Tracs are mainly for males(some females). But my dad owns a 2002 Ranger 4x4 XLT and it is good except for the transmission but that is not major and could be the way he drives. But he is also about to sell it so,i dont know!!!

That's interesting! I had a 2000 XLT supercab 3.0 Ranger. I like it until I realised what a dog it was. Got the ST and I still love it! A chick here who found a vehicle made for her. :D

I think Ford is going to lose the small pickup market. As stated in this thread, the Ranger is very dated, and lacks many safety and comfort features of the imports, Dodge and Chevy. Just compare the Colorado/Canyon to the Ranger and you'll see what I mean. The Sport Trac could be considered a replacement for the Ranger. However, Ford doesn't market the ST as a competitor of pickups. In fact, it doesn't market the ST at all, seperate from the Explorer line. The ST is also more expensive than those other small pickups.

For many, the lack of a solid rear axle also would keep them from buying an ST. That combined with the V-8 engine issues and the ugly front grille will put a big dent in Ford's sales.
