I stopped by a Ford dealer yesterday to see if the parts dept. was open. When I was leaving, a salesman came out and said," nice paint job, who did it " ? I said Ford. He looked at me like I had two heads and said I never saw that color before is that a southern car? I told him it was an 04 color and yellow was an 03 color, etc. I was amazed on how little some of these guys know. I mentioned a little about our site and how some of us teach these dealers a few things now and then. Just thought it was pretty funny he doesn't know his cars.
 
I have to agree with Caymen. Once I looked at a 4cyl Ranger and the guy when he was looking at the engine with me told me it was an 8 cycl. I didnt have the hart to tell him better and just said Yea!
 
Working at a dealership, I beg to differ partially. IF the salesperson has taken his tests for blueoval cert., then he should know a lot about colors accessories etc. These people have source books describing all the details about what they sell. Newbies, just like some of us lack head and book knowledge. And seasoned sales help may not be keeping up with the latest and newest (2, 3, 4, year old info.) colors and the like. May be a few factors. Next time tell him to keep up with his source book. (each vehicle has a list of available colors for the year of the book) No excuses for him! :cool:
 
had a dodge caravan with a 5spd manual tranny once.... took it in to a chrysler dealer because the clutch was making noise when depressed... they told me I was crazy, that vehicle doesn't have a clutch. Imagine the look on his face when he got in.....
 
IF the dealer never carried or sold any in that color, or never had a request for a special color, they will not know... BUT i will say that most salesman here don't know much about the cars here in NY..... The dealers change salesman almost every week....

No salesman would last more than a month where I used to work with that lack of knowledge. A good salesman will know many, many details to the point he should be able to bore you with trivia...unless you're a car nut too!



And, he should be able to tailor or tame that to the interest level of the customer. It's not always about selling the car but it's more about smoozing (talking comfortably) with the customer and building a rapport that leads to the sale.

I have only met one salesman in my life that knew his product. That was back in 1988. He was able to tell me things I didnt know about some of the cars I was looking at, that I had done exstensive research on. Never met another one like him.



Funny thing. 2months ago I went to check out the ford free style. The sales rep told me he didnot think any were on the lot. There were 10 parked in front and about 20 off to one side......:lol::lol:
 
I guess it's been too long since I was on a lot. The new generation of salesmen must expect cars to sell themselves. I only new of two lines that did that when I was taking ups. Even BMW's didn't sell themselves like Honda's did.



But, you still had to make the sale so the customer didn't go to other dealer accross town.
 
My salesman I deal with is a Blue Blooded Ford guy, like I am. He enjoys reading about Ford vehicles and how they compare to the competition. He test drives the competition on his time off. When we started talking, I found out that his father and my father were workmates and friends at the same Ford plant.



Many salesmend drift from dealer to dealer working at whichever one pays the best and expects the least out of them. It is hard to sell Fords if in the last 4 months, you sold Toyota's, Honda's, Dodges, and Chevy's. How long does that salesman expect to sell Fords? About a month. What does he really need to learn?

Most successful car salesmen are salesmen first and car guys second, if at all. I sold Olds's and Cadillacs in the 80's. I'm a car guy but that didn't matter, most "ups" only cared about what their trade-in was worth (if they were old) and what their payment was (if they were young). Very few people care about the axle ratio or fuel tank capacity.



Gotta love it when you go into a dealer and the guy hands you a card with someone else's name scratched out and his written in in pen. :lol:



The wife calls last week from the dealer (which is actually a very good one), she's getting state inspection for her car. The dealer was running coupons in the paper for free inspections. "They say I need new back brakes and turn the drums." "It doesn't have drums, it has 4 wheel discs". "Okay." She gets home, sure enough the rear rotors are turned and sure enough the work order says "turn drums". Oh well. :rolleyes:
 
Gary- Same thing happened to me at Bill Wood's Ford here in K.C. I had my trac out front waiting for the service garage to open and two salesman came up to me and said they really liked my ST, and wanted to know if it was "burnt orange". :lol: I corrected him on the color name and told him it was a limited color Ford offered in 04'. Poor guy didn't have a clue! :rolleyes: -Heather
 
You should have told them it was "autum scarlet". See if they woupld play around with that idea.
