DETROIT (AP)- Ford Motor Co. is selling its storied Jaguar and Land Rover brands to India's Tata Motors Ltd. in a deal that will net the U.S. automaker $1.7 billion - roughly a third of the price it paid for the two luxury brands.

Way Forward -- Buy a company, run it into the ground, and sell for 1/3 what you paid initially.

Not counting the money they poured into the company to try to keep it afloat, they lost close to 3.5 Billion on the deal. I'm glad they don't manage my money -- I would be destitute.

Hopefully none by me.

"No sir, I am in the us and a"--stereotypical phone tech support.

I'm still not over the picture someone posted up a while back of 1 effeminate indian dude and 4 little girls on a crappy rusty moped, and one of the "little girls" was his wife, meaning that the indian wife crisis drove him to pedo land, or indian women don't look much different as they age. "Crazy Punji's used wife emporium" still gives me negative stereotypes of that nation.

how many Indian Products or Services get used in North America?

Folks knocked LR and Jaguar when FoMoCo bought them because they were owned by a relatively inept American company (I specifically recall jokes about folks throwing $65,000 at a vehicle with the heart of a Ford in it). Now, they're owned by an Indian company, which is two steps removed from their European heritage.

To that effect, I mean what I said.

Kevin - Outsourcing is a decision made by Americans, no one else. it just happens that the largest english speaking workforce in the world just happens to be in India. the accent is funny, but their English is not wrong.

6 people on a crappy moped is thier circumstantial lifestyle - 1 person in 7 seater XLT SUV is ours.... one cannot critic the other.....

Either way, i'm not defending one country over the other or one people over the next. Tata bought Jag and LR because they had cash to do it. As a country that has a 10% GDP growth rate - the highest out of any country in the world, you'll see more and more of these types of deals. but that does not imply that these vehicles will be made by Indians in India for sale in America.... quality, customer service, and client satisfaction do have a lot to do with management though!

This sale has been in the works for several months. It just took a while to finalize the details. I think it is a good move for both companies. Ford is getting back to the pre Jac Nasser days of being Ford Motor Co. and not some multi-branded schizophrenic conglomerate. Nasser spent the company's cash reserves on poorly managed British marques, including Aston Martin, that will never operate at a profit for extended periods of time because they are, well, British. Tata gets to be a world player but I predict they will be no more successful at running these brands than Ford was. Ford will still have ties to these companies for several years due to shared technologies and drivetrains. The plants that produce the engines for Jag and Land Rover were apparently not included in the sale which means Ford will profit from the continued sale of these and other parts to Tata.

They kept a minority interest in Aston when it was sold last year. They still have Volvo and a controlling interest in Mazda. I don't see them selling off either of those two anytime soon since most of the passenger car models of all three brands (Ford, Volvo & Mazda) share platforms. Ford has also relied heavily on Volvo for safety technology.

Alan MulAlly is a perfectionist in these kind of deals. He screwed Boieing (IMHO) by selling off their part manufacturing businesses. And who can forget Connexxion? Or the Boeing Satellite business?

Pimp the small fries for a few $'s in his pocket.

What a Maroon!!!!!!!!!!

Will those "save the tatas" ribbons on cars soon have a double meaning with the Tata motors in the "us and a" ?

("tatas" is one of the worst euphemisms I've ever heard, right up there with "trim"....took me a while to even get it when I heard it.)

**I didn't criticize the moped riding so much as the fact that his wife looked identical to the little girls, whom some said were daughters. That's either creepy or sad.

Actually, the opposite is true. Land Rover and Jaguar were about ready to flop. Ford saved both of those brands from Extinction. The same with Mazda. If it were not for Ford, Mazda would be gone too.

As blksn8k already pointed out, Nasser spent WAY too much money trying to take Brittish icons and compete with the likes of BMW, Mercedes, and Audi. That is one of the reasons Ford is in the situation they are in today.

Nasser devoted way too much money building those brands and ignored the US market. SUV's were doing great and carried thier own. Ford ignored cars like the Escort. Ford brought the Focus to the US and under Nassers command, stripped every bit of quality out of it. All the money was spent on Jaguar, Aston Martin, and Land Rover.

Very sad situation indeed.

Brittish cars had special mechanic for a reason. They needed them.
