No sympathy from me. What the hell were they doing in a pleasure boat anywhere near Somalia?
Somalia has a monopoly on the south end of the Suez canal; the passage between the Horn & the Arabian Peninsula at the Red Sea is about 13 miles wide.
There are myriad people who pleasure cruise the world over, I don't see their location as being that absurd. Not like the Americans who went "hiking" in Iran, for instance.
The pirates are working off of mother ships now and venture 200 mile or more from shore.
Also this is so.
Did anyone else see the Spike TV terrorist special naval task force show over Summer 2010? In case you did not, the show televised the USN's anti-somalian task force. In the first episode, the USN finds a pirate speed boat (with weapons, shown on screen), yet can only fire warning shots per the UN stance.
So the pirate ship merely dumps its weapons overboard (which was also televised), and tries to run away. The naval cruiser, which is actually
faster than the small speedboat (which never ceases to amaze me) had no recourse but to sail in a huge circle around the speedboat, and use its massive wake to bring the speedboat to a halt.
The pirates were then captured, but couldn't be charged as they had no weapons, so they were given to the Somalian police, and basically went right back to pirating again.
Last time we dealt appropriately with Muslim terrorist pirates was during the Barbary Wars of the early 1800's.
Back then, Britain had the world's most impressive Navy, and they were content to simply pay tribute. Now, it's America which has taken that stance. Ugh. I wouldn't be surprised if only a handful of Americans knew who Stephen Decatur was today.
