This was the very first issue I had when I bought the Trac over four years ago, and it still isn't fixed. I've tried adjustments and springs without success. The actuator is strong and all linkages are connected. The door will not stay unlocked open or closed. I believe one of the tiny springs inside the latch has broken. Looking at the diagram this fix sounds easy but I'm intimidated by the tight space, visibility, and sharp edges. I've done every repair to date, with the exception of the transmission flush. Words of advice and/or encouragement appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I've not taken a latch out of a Sport Trac or Explorer, but I did take one out of the sliding side door of an Aerostar in the salvage yard. It was a bit less involved than this will be - no window track involved and maybe more space. I couldn't get the screws out of ours at home so I've never installed one. Pretty tough to get at stuck screws on the sliding door latch since the door doesn't clear the body by much.

The job probably isn't too bad, aside from the lack of space, poor visibility, and sharp edges.

Thanks Duane, removing the screws isn't a concern, I've got an impact driver with large Philips bits. My fear is removing the latch and not being able to reassemble. LaRue? (Key guy)
