For those of you that have a XCal fuel economy tune, I'd like to hear your opinion. MPG numbers would be great. I'd like to replace my old 87 and 97 octane performance tunes.

Experimented with the 87E tune for one tank after using the 87P and 93P tunes.

Could not detect any MPG gain using the same routes and driving habits.

My understanding is the economy tune retains the stock transmission shifting. (Yuck)

I believe most XCal users with ST's would recommend keeping your current tunes.

Thanks for the reply swshawaii.

My current tunes make my trans shift funny after a while so I've been driving stock. I'm curious, aside from shift parameters, how else does a tune take advantage of aftermarket intake and exhaust?

When I got mine, I asked for 1 tune that would bump up the transmission pressure. The guy said he would make me a tune that was more aggressive but used 87octane. I mainly use the light program, with the bump in pressure, about 99% of the time. I average 18.5mpg with either tune versus 16-17mpg without.

I didn't get the XCal for gas savings and I know I could get a tune for it now, but I specificaly wanted to raise my tranny pressure after I had a flush done. They guy at the transmission shop that did my flush had to step on the gas to raise pressure enough to flow through the lines. Then I remembered that police cruisers would trash their tanny's because they were starved of fluid. I did not want to buy a tranny.

I think that was $350 well spent.

In experience, I found that the 87p tune resulted in better MPG than the 87e tune.

The main thing that's going to yield better MPG is watching the weight of your right foot, no matter whether you're driving on an OEM or aftermarket tune. I simply didn't like the way the Trac felt and performed on the economy tunes. It did much better with the performance tune, and if I was conscious of my driving habits, I could get pretty good MPG on the performance tune.

I think it's a common misconception that the performance tunes will yield worse MPG. But that's only because after you upload the tune and drive it, it's so much fun that it's hard to keep your left foot from getting really heavy!:driving::banana:

I didn't get the Xcal for fuel econ either, but I realized that it's true that pedal control is key. I managed 18mpg after keeping revs below 2000rpms. Previously I was getting around 14mpg. Both without tunes. Having achieved this, I thought I can eek out even more with new tunes. Again, with current 87 and 92 octane performance tunes, my trans will start shifting funny, like the infamous flair.

Thanks for the replies!

I think I remember some past members, saying. They got better mpg with the torque tune. You get alot of grunt on low end. Then the tune tapers off as you reach cruise. You just have to keep your foot out of.

This is just from memory of some past threads years ago. I cant remember the member. He pulled a camper though. He posted the discovery, when he left the torque tune in after his vaction.
