fuel gauge reads full all the time

I have an 04 sport trac XLT & the battery has been out for 3-4 months. I put a new battery in & fuel gauge reads full all the time. Looking for suggestions. I have not done any checking yet.

Try lifting the neg cable for 10 minutes. Then see if the computer will reboot. Bang on the tank with a rubber mallet.

I was afraid that might be it & was hoping for a better solution. Gonna get a BFH and beat the tank up. haha LOL
