Anybody change/modify the tether on the 07/08 gas cap? It always seems mine is a little too short (no comments, please).

One of these days I'm gonna just rip it off and have the cap loose.

I simply removed mine...

I love mine. When I pull the cap, I hook the tether on the little hook on the door, and everything's just fine.

Dingo, explain that one time.

My issue is the tether is too short. When I'm filling up the tank, the cap is kinda "jammed" between the gas cap door and the filler nozzle.

I found that the gas cap scuffs the paint around the opening over a period of time. So i tend to want to pump my own gas cause the gas station attendants dont care. It gave me an idea to mount the gas cap strap to the door instead so it doesnt scratch the outside paint.

I'm really not the only one that noticed the hook, am I?

Dingo; Mine is an 07 Ltd V8 4x4. I don't have the hook. And my tether is attached to one of the three screws visible in your pic, at the filler tube.

When I fill the tank, the tether is barely long enough to get the cap out of the way. In fact, the cap will eventually scratch/mar the "outside" paint job.

D'OH!! I actually quit reading and went outside to look at mine because it sounds like Ken's patience level is about equal to mine with the short tether for the cap. (no I don't have a hook)

Most of the time it would probably just be a small blip on my annoyance radar but this cold weather and the winds here in Wyoming mean that your already half froze by the time you put in the credit card, wait for all the options to quit posting on the screen and finally get around to being able to pull the nozzle from the machine and can start pumping.

Good advice about just removing it. I can see that happening this weekend.

My '07 Ltd V8 4x4 does have the hook. Isn't that what Dingos pic is, an '07/08? My cap doesn't look the same as his though. I can't remember where I saw what the hook it was for, I wasn't using it at first. Maybe a Job 1 or 2 thing? Interesting...

Ford put that hook there so you would have a place to hang your 'spare' locking gas cap key :p

There is a member project about putting a screw with a shank on it inside the gas door so you can hang the gas cap on it.

Stant Instant fill cap. I haven't removed my gas cap in over a year, no scratches, no forgetting, no worries.

Thanks guys. I'm gonna "fix" mine this weekend.

Dingo: Since you've changed your gas cap, you no longer have the "BP" reminder telling you what brand of fuel is recommended. How in the world have you managed???

That explains everything! All this time I was supposed to be running BP!

It's $.30 more than everyone else around here for no apparent reason.

Dingo;

Your picture has shamed me into producing a picture of my "hookless" Gas Cap Door.

I've got an early 07' 4x4 V8 Ltd.

Sounds like a few others have the save setup as I.

Strange. Maybe you could just get the gas door hinge. Then you'd have the hole for the tether, and the hook.
