Drove by the local lot today and saw a dark red V8 Trac on the corner with an '06 sticker

in the window. No wonder these guys call our rides Ranger crew cabs.

I just got my ST back today after service. Mostly good news. They replaced front brake pads and rotors, replaced a wheel bearing, and replaced a couple parts in the steering system to fix the shudder (thought they were supposed to replace the steering pump per the TSB but they said otherwise) all under warranty and did a oil change and tire roatation. Total cost to me $38.10 the rest under warranty with no hassle, would have cost me about $800.

Couple things that bugged me, I got a letter & service coupons in the mail stating to always use the Ford Dealer for service because "we know your Explorer better than anyone" then on all the receipts and explanation of service paperwork they have given me it is listed as a Ford Ranger. Guy told me today that they have had only two other ST's there for service that he can remember, not many around here. Also I now need to take another look cause I think they have white ST there with "06" in the window and I didn't think anything of it at the time.

All and all they used me OK and I will go back I was considering driving to one farther away.

It's a shame yeah, but hopefully the lack of attention to detail stops there (re:06).

As for the TSB on the steering shudder (at slow speed or stationary), Alldata shows that the pump replacement only applies to Tracs with a build date earlier than April 18, 2001. Apparently, all builds after that date have the updated pump.

I've taken my 04 in for the same issue a couple of times but even after it was bled and a leak was repaired, the thing still manages to shudder, although very very rarely.

Hmm FlipTrac I was not aware of that info, so the 2002 + Tracs have the bigger Explorer pump. I have not been able to read the whole TSB, the part with the suggested fix but had just read several times that the fix was a new pump. Its interesting that 2001 Tracs problem was the pump and then even with the new pump the problem still existed. I haven't had a chance yet to see if it has stopped, its not that big of a deal anyway just thought I'd get it fixed under warranty. First time I had it there they said it was just air in the system and they bled it. That made no difference or if anything it was worse. Mine would shudder everytime I was turning in on a hard surface at a real slow speed. Again not a big deal but if its a known defect they should make it right.

What's the big deal? We are basically a crew cab ranger. Other then the read axle being flipped and some different body panels is there any other real different between the Ranger and the Sport Trac?

Yep, a crew cab Ranger with Explorer body panels. Truly a hybrid that makes a lot of sense and is, by far, the most versatile, and so far, the most reliable vehicle I've ever owned in the 40 years that I've owned them. There will always be a Trac or similar truck in my garage for the rest of my driving life.

Go back and get a picture of it !!!!!!

maybe there classifying the 07 Job1 as an 06? I would like to see if there are discounts on it. That would be great incentive to buy the quirky 07s.

No, more like when someone buys an FX35 it shoudl say 350Z on it as well. It's all the same platform.

Think of the 350Z and the G35 like the new Explorer with, and without, the 3rd row option. Other then having two extra seats in the rear, very little is different between the two. Both are sold in Japan under different names. It's all apart of Nissan's attempt to decrease the number of platforms they have, so with the introduction of the new V35, they introduced the Front-Midship platform, which was later used to build the Z33 and FX (whos chassis number I can't think of right now). Suspension and drivetrain are all the same, with minor tweaks to each to give a different feel. The bodies make them look different, but they aren't without the body.

Same deal with the ST, Ranger and Explorer. Take the body off and they are all basically the same, using the platform introduced in 1983 on the Ranger.

I understand that the ST's are very similar to the Explorer and Ranger and it is not a BIG deal, not something I'm going to lose sleep over. I certainly could see the common citizen calling it a Ranger as mine has been called many times and I dont get bent out of shape, but I would think that a dealer should, would, could tell the difference and refer to it as such.

Like SST said the price certainly isn't similar.
