Just getting a chance to catch up on the posts. First of all, my Chinese co-workers take meals very seriously. No matter how busy we are, no one would ever think of "working through lunch", as is often the case in the US. I'm in the Suzhou area, close to Shanghai, a lot of the food is regional, as Shanghai food on one side of the river is described as being more "sweet" than the spicy food on the other side. But back to the food; every meal has been a gastronomical experience. Todays lunch consisted of a steamed fish, complete with head & tail, a variety of steamed veggies, and of course the bowl of white rice. Yesterday we ate at a Korean restaurant, (luckily no dogs were served), but we did have the Kimshee, and a bunch of other un-identifiable stuff. The day before we ate at a Japanese restaurant. Although it was lunchtime, alcohol drinking was highly encouraged and we enjoyed the sake. I have found that there is a large variety of ethnic foods such as Tai, Korean, Chinese, Japanese, but most are Chinese-ized. The exception was our dinner last evening. We went to a little place called the "Drunken Chef", located in the back alley of one of the Suzhou streets. This is now my favorite place..an English owned bar, in the middle of Suzhou. Talk about a cultural experience.
That's about it for now..gotta get back to work.
