Hurricane Katrina passed pretty much over my town in the southwest corner of Mississippi (45 min east of New Orleans). Haven't heard too much news about my town because the roads are virtually impassable and no one can get in. I have seen the footage of the Gulfport, Biloxi area and am amazed at the amount of devestation.

That somes some of the footage to give everyone an idea of the amount of damage to the area. My family and I were very fortunate as we had the means to evacuate with some friends to San Antonio, TX and are holding up fine here. Not sure when we will be allowed back into our town or our home and not sure if we even have one to return to. The important thing is we all have our health and my Sport Trac is very safe, we brought it and left the wife's Mustang in the garage at home.

Please keep all those affected by this very powerful and devestating storm in your thoughts and your prayers if you choose. There those that were less fortunate than my friends and I and we are thinking of those that weren't able to make it out.

Glad to hear you are OK. I lived in Biloxi for about six months during military training, and know the folks down there are suffering a lot in your area. Keep us updated as you are able.

Robert.....Glad to hear you and family are ok. I hope you have a home to go back to.

Our prayers are with you. You say you are in San Antonio. My wifes brother, Leo Tyo II, lives there. He stayed there when he retired from the Air Force, Last year.

I'm glad you got out early and safe. I've been trying to contact some of my friends in the Miss. ANG but no luck.

I spent 2 yrs. total at Keesler AFB and I was just working in Gulfport last Feb/March. I cannot believe how bad it is from what I've seen on the news, especially seeing landmarks that I'm very familiar with. Seeing the Copa Casino completely move to the otherside of the Grand Casino is an amazing demonstration of hurricane power.

I don't think there has been anything like it, I pray there won't be again.

Wonder if the state of MS will change the laws and allow casinos to build on solid ground instead of piers out in the water? Losing $500,000 a day in state revenue is nothing to sneeze at.

I am glad you all are safe and hope the other folks that have not checked on the site are safe and just do not have power for now.

I thought the casinos there were the River boats? Could be still making a profit.. :)

seriously I hope everyone is safe

The Casinos in Biloxi/Gulfport are built on barges. These barges are not something that can be moved at will under their own power. During the storm, they broke from their moorings and went floating through the city tearing up anything in their path. Really a pretty stupid idea in my opinion. From what I have seen, it seems that only the Beau Rivage has survived pretty much intact.

Robert,

Glad to hear you and your family are safe. The devastation is unbelievable.

If anyone is looking for a way to help, here is a suggestion:

There are many, many U.S. Navy Sailors stationed in the New Orleans, Mississippi Gulf Coast areas that were severely impacted by this disaster. While larger relief organizations such as the Red Cross and Salvation Army seem to get much more media attention, there is an organization that exists specifically for the purpose of assisting Sailors and Marines in times of need.

Its called the Navy and Marine Corps Relief Society. You can contribute at the link below:

We have (maybe I should say had) friends in Gautier, Mississippi. He went to jail last year because he did something stupid, and she moved in with her dad. Her dad is getting old and hard to move aroud, so they rode Ivan out. I'll bet they did the same thing this time, too. I hope not. The video from the Jackson TV station showed there isn't much left of Gautier. Her cell phone was cut off some time ago (months), but we've been hoping it would be turned on again, since it's the only way we have of contacting her. We weren't able to find out where her dad lived before we lost contact with her.

Sitting here at work watching the news from down there.... you guys are all in my prayers. We had three more ships roll out this A.M. to go down and provide assistance, there is one already there on station. All are large amphibs so they will have medical facilities and the ability to make fresh water for lots of folks---although I do not know what they will be tasked with.

wxscpo - Glad to hear you and your family are safe. We continue to say prayers for all that have been impacted by this storm.

The darn weather folks dropped the ball on this one. Please feel free to smack the next meteorologist you see. They are such a shifty group of folks.
