Chris,

Welcome to the site...

As for the question, is it hard to move the column shifter ?? after you step on the brake ??

Try stepping on the brake, then wait 2 seconds and then take it out ???

It could be the linkage needs to be greased, or something electrical with the safety in the steering column..

Alot of times the solenoid inside of the column starts to stick, caused by years of yanking the shifter down while the solenoid wasn't fully engaged. Usually you can do like Todd says and wait about 2 seconds after you apply the brake and it should work, but eventually you will get tired of it. For the record I have replaced more than one of these on ST's and likewise of the F series

Two questions? Do you put the truck in neutral set the parking brake, then put it in park? is the steering wheel locked when you try to put it in gear? If you do the firat thing you'll save the solenoid and the parking pin on the transmission, when you just put the truck in park there is pressure put on the parking pin. If your sterring wheel is locked then just try turning the wheel and key at same time.

My wifes '01 escape sometime required the brake to be pushed twice. Must have been the solenoid not releasing.
