Hope all the HI members and their families are ok. Well, I really hope luck is on everyone's side there.

Damn, 6.6 is a pretty big 'quake. Hopefully everyone is OK.

Not to downplay the size of the quake, but I grew up in Alaska...I've ridden high 6's with little to no damage, and I know that Hawaii has to know that they are in a highly volitile zone for earthquakes (they are on volcanos afterall), how can they declare a state of emergency because of the disaster area???

I've experienced a 7.2 and 7.8 in the last 15 years. The 7.2 was far more shaking and rolling than the bigger quake because I lived closer to the epic center. Not sure why they are declaring it as such. I was just listenning to CNN an they said the Power Station were to come back online shortly and part of the highway is closed due to landslides. Maybe because a high percentage of the population is tourist and having a quake there is rare? I'm only guessing.

damn tourists...wait, tons of those in Alaska too :p

only thing I can think that has caused all the declarations is that they don't normally have a quake this big, but wouldn't people build buildings with that large of a quake in mind? I hope that everyone is okay there and that things get back to normal quickly!

The damage caused by quakes is not always the same in different places. San Francisco has large quakes, but what makes them so severe is the sandy soil which becomes like a liquid during quakes. Hawaii may have similar issues, since the islands geologically are very young. They have to be wary of tsunamis as well. One factor they have to be concerned about too is that they are very isolated from the rest of the World. If a quake cuts off communication, then it would be difficult for them to know what is going on to coordinate relief efforts.
