Hey everybody -

I found a used bed extender on the local craigslist for $50. Ad said it was OEM off a 2001 Sport Trac. Picked it up and brought it home. I quickly realized that I do not have the pivot pins for the bed. Thanks to a quick search of these forums I found a pic of what they look like and where they go and I now know the part number, that they're available from one of the site vendors, how much they cost and that they are self-tapping.

Here's the problem...I don't think it's the right extender for my 2005 Sport Trac. If I were to install the pivot pins and attach the extender to them, the locking pins would not line up with the upper/lower holes. The extender isn't tall enough (i/e the top/bottom bars aren't far enough away from the center bar for the locking pins to line up with the holes).

The part number on the extender is 1U5A-19G299-AA. Did a google search and found about as many people saying it's OEM Ford for the 1st Gen Sport Trac as there are people saying it's an aftermarket cage from Westin that fits Rangers and Sport Tracs. It sure doesn't seem to fit my 05.

Can anyone shed some light on this for me? I'm guessing I'll need to re-sell and keep looking for the right one unless I am missing something.

Thanks,

James

I do know that I purchased extender and the pins from a guy with an 03 Trac and it went in my 05 fine everything lined up fine and it works fine. If it's really a 1st Gen Extender it should fine.

2001-2005 is the same extender. The "locking pin" holes do not line up exactly on mine but can be locked by firm pressure on them while "jiggling' the extender. From posts elsewhere it appears you do have the correct extender. Where did you pull that number from and I'll look at mine to verify that.

The pins do NOT go in the upper holes, they go in the holes near the center. This allows the extender to pivot from the center, not flip over and be off-centered when flipped into the bed for example..

Steve M - there is a sticker on mine, on the middle bar, that has the model number listed at the lower right corner. That's where I got the number from.

Coastiejoe - you're talking about the pivot pins. Yes, those would go in the center holes. There are also locking pins that go in the top holes when the bed extender is on the tailgate and in the bottom holes when the bed extender is flipped over into the bed.

I just ran out and measured...the distance between the top (locking) and middle (pivot) holes on the truck bed is about 5.5" the distance between the top and middle bars on the extender is 4.25" (measure from the locking pin to where the pivot pin would seat). They won't line up.

There are also locking pins that go in the top holes when the bed extender is on the tailgate and in the bottom holes when the bed extender is flipped over into the bed.

My '04 is the opposite of that....

It can be installed either way. The 'correct' way (IMHO) is to install the extender with the rails sitting on the tailgate when you place it over the pins.

The reason for that is so the extender cannot be stolen with the tailgate up and locked, as you would not be able to get it off the pivot pins.
