The Katrina disaster has me thinking about a term that gets so much play in our socialistic society.

Homeless

What does this mean? What does it mean when we plan to spend billions on our nation's homeless?

As I walk from my bus to my office each day (and back), I see the same guys in the same spots with the same signs taking in considerable amounts of cash as they panhandle the passers-by. These people aren't "homeless." They are living their chosen lives.

Yes, there are those who end up on the streets for varied hellish reasons that are absolutely sad. But those who want help and want to help themselves, there is assistance.

Truly homeless. These are the people I give my financial assistance (and more) to.

My construction manager has tried several times to hire guys off the street just to help them out. He offered them transportation, housing, and food to travel with our work crews to different parts of the country, as well as a paycheck. Every single one turned him down, and most of them said they could make more standing on the streetcorner.

Todd,

During the Clinton-no-wars era, the indigent/bum/street people/homeless population rose to all time highs. It has nothing to do with whether or not we went to war. You can spend all the money we've spent (on this war) on the homeless problem and all we'll have is more homeless.

There's a probverb about teaching a man to fish or giving him a fish.

We agree on something...... We have a large "homeless" population here in Key West, and it grows every year- no hard freeze to thin the herd. As a member of the hospital medical staff I have to donate my time and office to see these alcoholics, who don't have to pay a dime for medical care but always have beer and cigarettes on board. I would say the root cause is a failure of responsibility- beginning, I'm sure, with their parent or parents. Infuriating....the county built a shelter for them but its nearly empty due to a no booze or drugs policy.

I'm afraid I have no sympathy for homeless people or people on welfare. I'm sure there are some in real need but most choose their path. This country needs to end welfare and give the money to people that truly need help like these folks on the Gulf Coast that have lost everything they had.

:wacko::wacko:

I don't follow this stuff at all, maybe i should have not commented....Ohh well...:wacko:

As a teenager, I used to work with my stepfather, who was a driver on a Chicago Tribune circulation truck. The Trib used Manpower labor for driver's helpers, and they got a lot of the guys from Madison Ave., a notorious place for 'bums' in the 'old days'. Dive is correct in that these are people that 'chose' the life, for whatever reason. All the 'homeless' men that I worked with had 'real' jobs at one point, and decided to walk away from it. One told me that he used to be a doctor. He came home one day, the wife & kids were gone, and a 'Dear John' letter was all she left. His exact words were... "Kid, I went out and got drunk, and I ain't been sober since!" No disaster, just decided to throw it all away because of a setback. Boo Hoo. Sorry. But get it together!

I have to deal with panhandler every time I fill up at the local gas station. They get mad because I tell them right off as they approach... "NO MONEY!"

We complain about Iraq. We throw stones because "we're there for the oil." Hate to break the news, but when was the LAST time we didn't use oil for something. SO if Iraq's war is for oil, so be it.
