My next purchase for my ST is to replace the stock radio witha nice MP3 player. I am planning on transfering some of my music CDs to the MP3 format.

So, my question is: How do I burn MP3 CDs? I mean what software and/or hardware do I need?

I just take the songs from my computer an using Nero or windows media player, you can burn them to the Disc...

DOH! Just looked at my NERO and there it is. Make MP3 Disc option.

OK, now do I need special discs? I assume I do since so much is packed onto one.

Nope... Use regular cd....

To encode cda files in Nero you will have to go tab encoding and use save tracks. Nero gives you 30 free encodes but then you have to buy the mp3 plugin, at least in Nero 6. I'm not sure if 7 comes with the plugin.

Generally I can put 6-7 complete cd's on a mp3 disc. When burning, burn as a data disc. Usually takes me 1-2 minutes for 700mb.

Don't bother buying the mp3 plug in for Nero. There's dozens of programs that will burn mp3 CDs for free. The one I use all the time is iTunes. You can grab it at www.itunes.com

Or just simply use Windows Media Player. It lets you pop in a music CD and 'rip' it into MP3.

Don't install the iTunes software unless you plan on buying a iPod. iTunes installs files that run all the time on your pc, taking up memory.

Careful if you use WiMP to rip your CDs, by default it is set to rip them into copy protected WMA files which you won't be able to play anywhere else. Similar warning goes for iTunes, by default it rips them as AAC format instead of the more standard MP3. For both programs you can just go change the settings and you'll be fine.

There are many free programs out there to rip cd's to mp3 format. I use Exact Audio Copy with the Lame MP3 encoder.

To make a cd of MP3 files, all you need is a standard CD-R, and burn it as a data disc. Your mp3 head unit should allow you to set up folders on the cd. I typically put each album in its own folder.

Use nero or the windows CD burn feature... to burn the disks.

If you need to Rip your OWN cd collection use can use a convertor like:

CDEX to do this for FREE.

it is located at: http://sourceforge.net/projects/cdexos

I did my 400+ cd collection this way an can access the whole collection via my wireless network and sound system. :)

Oh.. and via my Pioneer Premium MP3 deck in the Trac :)
