I just picked up my first Sport Trac Thursday - a new 09 XLT.

How do you carry a 4x8 sheet? Can anyone post pictures?

Thanks,

Jeff

On top of the two wheel wells..... Either use a 2x4 or something under it so it doesn't bounce to strengthen it out the back, leave the tailgate open and strap it down...

Done it many of times.. With Sheetrock, Plastic, All sorts of stuff....

Do you have a bed extender? I have not tried in my 2008 yet but my 2001 I used the bed extender and slide the sheet(s) in on top of it.

Hi Jeff - I have always used the factory bed extender and tonneau. I am sure others with the gen2 Trac can chime in with what other options are out there.

I do not have the bed extender or tonneau cover yet. Can you suggest the best type?

For $40, Harbor Freight sells a bed extender that installs in a 2" receiver. It provides tie-downs on each side. See below.

Alternatively, Jeff, I have one that I do not and will not use (it was to haul a kayak before I purchased a Yakima top system). If you have a 2" receiver, for $20, it's yours. (I'm about 7 miles west of Philly and easily could meet you somewhere near WC; I'll also be heading to Eden on Thursday and could stop along the way).

I have one of those extenders as well and I can say they work mint! Adjust it to the right height and with some 2x4 across the wheel wells you are all set to go!

Hey Adam - I've seen you make this sort of generous offer a few times now. You're a good guy, just wanted to point that out. It being Easter and all, I was going to say you're a good egg, but I held back. Till just then... ;-)

Reminds me of a neighbor that was trying to put a 4x8 sheet of plywood on top of a van while standing up in the top. She (yep she) couldn't get it to lay down because she was on the top with it. I can still see her in my mind......Very funny.

Jeff:

I'll load it in the Trac now (just about to drive back from the Poconos to Philly). I'll e-mail you to arrange to meet this week.

Best,

Adam

I saw the reference to hauling kayaks in this thread. Any advice for a rack that will haul one or two on an Adrenalin (no roof racks). I'd like to haul them high and use the bed for related gear, etc.

Thanks...

I just put 4x8s on top of the hard bed cover and strap it down with ratchet straps on the outside cleats. Long lumber goes on top too and partialy in the rear window ratcheted down tightly. Then I got the rest of the bed to hold everything else.

Just put the tailgate down, slide it into the grooves in the bed 3/4 over to one side, lean the 4x8 sheet onto its side, take a tie down and hook it on the 2 rear (in bed) anchors... done.

I do this all the time.

Buy two scrap 2x4's along with the drywall and set them between the bottom front corner of the bed and the top of the tailgate (since you said you don't have the bed extender). The drywall (or plywood) will angle down and that will keep it in place. This method has served me well with two Rangers and two Sport Tracs.

For a tonneau I've used the Sportmasters vinyl unit on this Trac and my previous one. I often need the whole bed open since it is a working truck and a hard cover would not work for me.
