Seriously though, this thread and the other one about people not searching led me to do an experiment.

I wondered how hard it would be for a NOOB to answer the question: "Where do I find my keyless entry code?"

I think one of the problems with search might be the defaults.

I submit that the following layouts and defaults should be used for optimal search hits:

What do others think? Rich?

I think a group of people should get together and do a good FAQ page, and the button can be put next to the search button at the top and bottom of the page...

I would love to do it, and just might with some help and Rich's blessing ????

Or even better, Todd, add a moderator feature that allows multiple moderators, with the new role to be the maintainance of "sticky posts". The sticky posts could be your FAQ. Any post that is cleaned up and deemed of historical merit gets "stuck" by a moderator. The moderator's task are to clean it up, spellcheck it, give it a meaningful title.

Then, like your idea, the sticky posts act as your FAQ.

Of course, I vote Todd Z as such a moderator.

Really, we are talking about the same thing I think...just a different process for achieving the same results.

Tom,

Speaking from experience over on EF, sticky posts do not work. There's a reason we have this:

:)

Honestly, don't sweat the small stuff here. If you see a repeat post and don't want to respond, don't respond.

I have been wondering since joining here what the reason was that we dont have the same forum design that most forums have. Such as the one in the post above. It seems that sites that use this style are much better organized and easier to search. Im guessing that its a monetary reason, but I was just curious.

And on the topic I think that revised search defaults would be great and help out alot.

Personally I like the layout of this site 100% better than the other forums...

i like the layout of this site compared to others, its so easy to use. i guess thats one the big reasons, i dont jump on rangerpowersports that often anymore.

Yeah it is easier I'll agree with that, just that the best way to look at this site is without the info in categories, which basically eliminates all of the organization. Just a thought is all. Im just happy to have a resource other than a book or the crappy ford dealers

Agreed. I am going to change the search defaults.

This software is badly in need of an overall, and I am taking steps to address it.

Ian, to answer your question, I started writing this software before phpBB, vBulletin, etc., existed. I probably should have changed over to one of those forums sometime in the past, but technical barriers and life in general got in the way.

I agree with you, Todd. There's a point where other fora can be over-compartmentalized. I like this site because I can see all posts in any category (user-chosen). On others, I have the tendency to check my forum, and only those I enjoy (the general, off-topic subsections). The design here is really great, despite it being so different from vBulletin.

I to am more partial to this style of Forum. Easier to get used to the way things work on here compared to others.;)

Of course, if we all did a search, this topic has been covered before.:p
