How does sync work? Does it work off the radio head unit?

If I got a new ST with sync and replaced the stock radio with the aftermarket in dash nav from my current ST would sync work?

The short answer is no, however I think...think that there may be companies out there making kits to incorporate SYNC to work with their headunits

So if i want the sync to work i will have to stick with the Ford Navigation.

My Avic-Z1 is about 4 years old and I doubt it will be able to do it.

Anyone have any experience with the ford nav that is out now?

any good?

I have the new Nav unit in my 2010 Edge...it is quite awesome. A couple things on it don't make sense but I guess that goes with just about anything. I had a Avic-Z1 in one of my vehicles a few years ago and that can't even come close to this unit. Use a Sync Lockpick on it and all the annoying safety features are disabled adn you can plug a rear camera into it just like that.

Really, i would never thought that.

Can you play dvd movies when you are driving for the kid?

(i know the safety issues, so no one needs to give me a lecture. I have been doing it for 3 years. i don't watch the movie while I'm driving. I also don't want screens in the headrests and all that.)

^^^^

If you purchase a Sync Lockpic from Coastal Electronics, which just plugs into the exsisting wiring harness, it takes away all the nanny controls and lets you do address input, watch dvds and other things that are disabled while on the fly. It also lets you incorporate a camera into the system that turns on in reverse or you can turn it on whenever you want. Not to mention the 10 gig hard drive that you can store music on adn all of this is voice command through Sync.

L1Tech are you familiar with the Lincoln MKX THX sound system? I'm talking about the one with 14 speakers. Is it somewhat better than the standard 9 speakers found in the Edge? Just curious on your thoughts.

Great info L1tech. I will be looking into it.

If you have time, what does the Ford Nav do that makes it so much better than the Avic-Z1?

Thanks

Mickey

The "standard" system in the Edge is just 4 speakers. The "premium" system that is included with the nav system on the SEL and the Limited is 9 speakers and a sub in the back. Now on the sport versions of the Edge it is also a 9 speaker setup with a sub in the back but they locate the front tweeters in the a pillar wheras the other "premium" setups have the front tweeters piggybacked to the front speakers in the doors. I have listened to both versions of the "premium" in the Edge adn the only real difference is the front sound stage is a little crisper on the sport model due to the location of the tweeters...the MKX with THX is a different creature. IMO it isn't any louder than the premium in the Edge but the clarity is definetely improved adn if I were to have bought an MKX it would have been a must.

Realistically they both do the same thing, I think overall the new nav system Ford has out is just easier to use than the Z1 and with the Sync system it just makes for a nice overall user experience. It's a learning curve but once you get the hang of it it's pretty freakin awesome. IMO the video quality on the new Nav is also better than that of the Z1. I haven't been able to play with any of Pioneers new offerings in the nav market but I am sure they have inproved since the Z1 but honestly if you can afford to get the factory setup go for it...just looks better overall IMO.

Thanks L1Tech,

I went for the Ford Sync Nav set up.

Who makes the unit for Ford? Not that it matters, just curious.

Where can I read some info on the Sync / Nav set up? I forgot to get a brochure from the dealer. Maybe I can start learning some things about it now. :)

Supposedly Xanavi makes the nav system. As far as reading up on it you can try fordsyncforum.com or perhaps go to syncmyride.com. I have browsed those sites briefly but never realyl dug into them so I don't really know what info they have.

thanks again.

those are nice sites. I'm going to poke around and see what i can learn.
