I can get behind this. What about you?

In our current economic situation, every little thing we buy or do affects someone else and perhaps even their job.

So, after reading this email, I think this lady is on the right track. Let's get behind her!!

My grandson likes Hershey's candy. It is marked made in Mexico now. I do not buy it any more. My favorite toothpaste Colgate is made in Mexico now. I have switched to Crest. You have to read the labels on everything.

This past weekend I was at Kroger. I needed 6 light bulbs and Bounce dryer sheets. I was in the light bulb aisle and right next to the GE brand I normally buy was an off brand labeled,

"Everyday Value." I picked up both types of bulbs and compared the stats - they were the same except for the price. The GE bulbs were more money than the Everyday Value brand but the thing that surprised me the most was the fact that GE was made in MEXICO and the Everyday Value brand was made in - get ready for this - the USA in a company in Cleveland, Ohio.

So throw out the myth that you cannot find products you use every day that are made right here.

So on to another aisle - Bounce Dryer Sheets....yep, you guessed it, Bounce cost more money and is made in Canada . The Everyday Value brand was less money and MADE IN THE USA ! I did laundry yesterday and the dryer sheets performed just like the Bounce Free I have been using for years and at almost half the price!

So my challenge to you is to start reading the labels when you shop for everyday things and see what you can find that is made in the USA - the job you save may be your own or your neighbors!

If you accept the challenge, pass this on to others in your address book so we can all start buying American, one light bulb at a time! Stop buying from China ... Mexico ........(We should have awakened a decade ago......)

Let's get with the program.... Help our fellow Americans keep their jobs and create more jobs here in the U.S.A. !!! It may be hard at first, but see what you can and are willing to do without to save those jobs.

Life isn't about how to survive the storm, but how to dance in the rain.

start buying American, one light bulb at a time!

Aren't incandescent bulbs banned sometime down the road, so we'd have to buy them from foreigners?

And CF lights are antiques in wake of all this new LED stuff that's coming out.

I can get behind it buying US products, but I don't see why the article hates on Canada. Canada and America are linked. World's longest common border.

Not buying Canadian goods and vice versa hurt both sides during the Great Depression :(

(Besides, I plan to go back to Canada in the future)

Respectfully, I don't see how this could work.

There are too few companies that manufacture products in the states now and therefore there are no alternative products to select from.

Also, this provincial way of thinking is somewhat simplistic. I say provincial as defined by the belief that one best serves themselves and their neighbors by purchasing goods and services from each other, exclusively. If you truly believe in such an ideology, then the question ultimately is who is your neighbor and what is your neighborhood?

There was a time in this country that all small communities were largely self-contained and self-sufficient. I am sure there were those that felt that the railroad would kill local businessesand to a certain extent, it did. The advent of the superhighway and long-haul trucking made regional produce, and regional goods available to all people across the country, changing the face of agriculture in this country.

So, if you really think we should pull back manufacturing jobs, then I ask, should we also let the railroads decay, let the highways crumble, and open back up the corner farmers market, resurrect the local farms, and bring back the mill, the grist and the corner baker?

We enjoyed prosperity as we moved outside our local borders, and starting buying goods and services produced by others. Why is this any different?

Just because the tops are put on the bottoms across country border, and not across some state border, I see no difference. Sure, one could say that we have less jobs, and we keep less of the money, domestically, but thats all relative. If you live in NYC, those werent jobs that were available to you anyway. Likewise, the reason for offshoring jobs is to better the bottom line and make companies more profitable, which means other types of jobs, for longer.

Again, the chest beating of Buy American seems patriotic, but I suspect if we could flip a switch and close our borders to all outside manufacturing, the net-effect would be negative.

Anyone with a clue knows you buy all imported goods. You import double what you export and everyone will prosper.

IIRC USA and Canada import more goods then they export......

There Caymen goes again exchanging sarcasm for intelligent debate. It's no wonder we can't produce anything anyone wants anymore in this country. ;)

Unemotional logic, common sense and reasoning demand that we recognize that the offshored-manufacturing of today harkens back to a progression that started when Eli Whitney created the cotton gin, or maybe back even further when the first man fashioned a bone to a stick with some animal sinew and hoed a field, or another man diverted the first stream to irrigate his crops.

It's called progress. It's generally for the greater good, but often at the expense of current circumstances of a few. Those that would try to stand in the way of progress typically are those with the most to lose, but as stated, they are the minority.

Im sure those that made mechanical tabulators got really ticked off when the transistor and then the computer chip were invented. But none of them cried foul and called the technology inventors unAmerican!

How do you know that? Did you know each and every one of them personally? :D

The story that started this thread cites the example of a light bulb sold by GE (an American-based company) that is made in Mexico, and discourages the purchase of this Mexican-made product being sold by an American company.

Let's see... The Fusion, sold by Ford (the last non-state-owned major car company based in America), is made in Mexico. The Accord, sold by Japan-based Honda, is made in Marysville, OH, USA. So, using the logic of in the original posting, should one buy an Accord rather than a Fusion?

we have to realize that it is no longer productive and cost efficient to make some products in america. importing these products are better for our economy then for us to make them.

it is reality and some people just cannot accept it. :(

No, never.

As I said the other day, it's more "American" to buy a Toyota than a Chevrolet.

Sadly, this is so true. No honest self-professed patriot could buy a new chevy or gm vehicle.

While I don't like it, sending money to Okasan Toyota is more patriotic than giving $$ to obama's socialistic car producer that was unconstitutionally nationalized.

(Though if Ford dies, Japan wins :( :( :( )

Adam Smith needs to come back and take his visible hand and beat down on the socialists in power here in America..though he'd have to wait in line.

Average annual income mainland China 4-5K. More than one fifth of the world population.

How much product does Wal-Mart buy from from China? Do some research. Nuff Said. :(
