Okay, so than why is Rich complaining that the guys at the dealer must have tightened his oil filter too much. Could it be that it tightened itself since that seems to me the phenomena for which oil filter wrenches were invented?

I haven't ever needed a filter wrench. I fill the new filter with fresh oil, rub some on the gasket, and on the threads. When I remove, I wait for the filter to cool off, as when it is hot, it is on very tight, when it has cooled, it comes off by hand easily. and I change it at every oil change. Why be cheap, it costs $5 to have a nice clean filter on there at every change.

Putting the new one on, I screw it on by hand till it stops, and then tighten a bit more by hand.

spray some brake parts cleaner on a rag and use the rag to grip the filter... the brake parts claner cuts through the oil. Then it's all up to your strength:D
