That light is also wired to the reservoir of your master cylinder. I would bet if you check the cylinder it is a bit low.



As your brakes wear the fluid lowers. Once it lowers to a certain point, the float activates the light.



When it flashes or flickers that is normally a result of the fluid being close to the low level and moving around just enough to trip the light.

... and if the fluid is low, check for a leak and check the pad thickness, but do not simply add fluid (it went somewhere).
 
I'll agree it went somewhere. In most cases it fills to the equivalent of the brake pad loss. The thinner the pad the more fluid required to fill the cylinder. It will go hand in hand.



If you have no leaks, good brakes and the thickness of the pads is acceptable your good to go until it is time for a brake job...
