I am looking to buy a Sport Trac later this month.

Anyone care to fill me in on the difference in the interiors of Generation I and Generation II Sport tracs? My budget allows me to consider a 2007 or 2008, but I don't want to rule out a nice early generation 2001-2006. I am 6'4" and haven't even sat in one but did drive a 97 explorer many times which I think is the same cab. I have heard the wheelbase got longer in 2007 but what about the interior cab dimensions? What years did they start putting in more airbags? Any side airbags in back for the kids?

(EDIT : I now know there are no 4cyls - I was confused so I took that part out)

Welcome to the site and good luck with your search!

Cars.com is a great site for comparing side by side.

Lot's of info here too! 2001-05 only with 4.0L SOHC V-6.

Okay, I guess I was wishing/confused there was a 4 cyl out there. Thanks for the cars.com link. If anyone knows what year they started putting airbags in every nook and cranny that will help me too.

I believe it was in 2008, that they did all the airbags(driver, passenger and side curtains) I'm 6'2" and 260# and fit well in the 2nd gen Trac. I also believe all models are "stretched" Explorers. In the case of the 2007-2010 models, the chassis was lengthened 17.5" resulting in a bit more cab space. Its evident if you look at the back doors of both vehicles, you'll see the Explorer has a wheelwell cutout in the door whereas the Trac has a full size door! My V8 normally gets about 15-16mpg around town. Maybe 20-21 on long highway trips. I think the V6 is pretty close to that. Don't expect stellar mileage from these vehicles as they are nothing more than a 5000lb brick going down the road.(not aerodynamic) Happy hunting, Bob

6' 6" 265 here and just fine in a gen 1. Only issue is that no one can sit behind me, but that's normal in everything I drive. Ditto on the moon-roof. I don't have one. My wife's fusion does, so I have to recline another notch or sit with my head tilted into the opening...:bwahaha:

+ 1 on the moonroof! My '03 Adrenalin and '07 Limited had moonroofs. I am 6'3" and was sold on NOT getting a moonroof on my '10 as soon as I sat in one and realized I could now sit up straight. I was slouching all those years in my trucks with the moonroofs.

Both Gen I and Gen II have enough interior room for me. There are so many advantages and improvements of the Gen II over the first generation. Get a V8- best move I ever made in my Tracs!
