Very good.

I let my employees at work self direct themselves...to a point. I point them in the direction I need them to go and let them do it.

I have the highest productvity in both of my departments on my shift. 3rd shift has the second highest. They do not have a supervisor.

1st shift is the lowest. They have the most people making sure product is being worked on.

go figure...

Gary,

Awesome diagram! Did you design it yourself? I am sure you find it mighty handy.

Tom,

That is the way I worked as a process control instrument tech. Though I was in maintenance. I worked for the operators. Where ever in the whole plant.

No matter the control problem. I usualy had the control issue repaired. Before my supervisor, came to the shop with the work order. He would laugh when I said, already fixed it

I prefered to self direct my self. Get the problem repaired. Before the unit went down. We had 4 techs. Only one would wait till the supervisor gave him the job and WO. He was a sorry trouble maker. The other 3 of us, did more work, by self directing. We liked it that way though.

Tom, Eddie,

Yep, the plantation model is alive and well in most of American business still today. There are those that "do", and those that "tell them what to do." The incentives are put in place for those that do as they are told, when they are told.

As our country moves away (has already moved away, for the most part) from manufacturing into knowledge work, that model has to change. Innovation can't be demanded. It is not something that you can instruct of a subordinate.
