My work sent me mail saying for us to block our IP Address when accessing our work sites. (I assume they meant for us to "hide"" our address)..

Is anyone using such an item? If so, are you happy with it? Is it free or come with a cost?

Thanks in advance...

Coastie,

I am not sure what your IT folks are asking you to do.

Often if you have work provided laptops the IT folks within a company will send out instructions or otherwise set up software firewalls and block certain IP traffic inbound on that laptop.

It sounds like they are asking you to block or otherwise "hide" your outbound IP address that your computer uses. Not sure why they would want you to do that as typically the main reason to do so is for anonymity...usually something one wants when doing illicit things.

However, such can be accomplished by simply using a proxy Internet server (aka proxy server).

There are free proxy servers out there.

Google: free proxy server.

Also, if your IT folks are recommending this, then they should also be recommending the software and/or the proxy server to use.

I felt pretty much the same as you have pointed out.

I am betting this was an idea they came up with but did little to no research as of yet. We are talking about the government ya know....

I strongly expect to see follow-up on both clarification as well as some sort of software if they in fact truly want us to hide our IP's.

I suppose we will see... H,,,

There are IP masking services, don't know if they're free or not.

On Firefox if you go to Tools, there is a Private Browsing option. It doesn't save or show where you've been so your wife can't find the porn sites you've been surfing but I don't know if it hides your IP address going out.

Your employer probably has a static IP address, which is why they'd want you to hide it. AFAIK, with regular internet service the IP changes every time you surf.

Step one. 'They' asked you to do what you asked about. 'They' have the obligation to provide the tools to accomplish that task. Turn the request back to them and ask that they provide the tools, or means, to do it.

As suspected, it was a request that was released before they actually had enough details to back their thoughts.

They are now working on getting the license for commercial software and then will provide further information and details...
