Called Sears today to get a price on some Monroe shocks. Price was ok, then they tell me that they will have to do a front end alignment. Is this really needed or not. What does changing shocks do to the alignment?

Not needed because of replacing shocks, but maybe your truck needs it because it needs it not because of the shocks.

More than likely they are just trying to upsell you though.

They didnt even see my truck. I talked to them on the phone. I think you are right. Just trying to sell more services.

i forget the intervals of mileage as to when you should get an alignment, but as long as the ride is fine, you are probably ok.

my local tire place instructed me to come in every 6-7 thousand miles (mudders are hard to keep aligned) so i guess all-terrains would be about 10-11 thousand?

A front end alignment is required on any car with struts for shock absorbers. However, we do not have struts on our Sport Tracs, so no alignment is needed. Either they were trying to get your money, or they just didn't know enough.

Sears sales men make a HUGE commission on selling an alignment......

I worked at sears for 4 years, helped pay for colege....

The commissions were crazy..

if you have good even wear all the way across the front tires, then no need for an alignment, any cupping could be from worn shocks or bad tires, etc.

Its been my experance that you shouldn't take your car to Sears. I have heard nothing but bad stories from people that did. That's just my opinion.

A buddy of mine worked at a Goodyear shop during high school. They had a contest/promotion to see who could sell the most shocks during a month. My buddy said that everything that came in that month got new shocks. Oil change?- new shocks. Rotate tires? -new shocks. Tuneup? -new shocks. Said the worst deal was a little old lady who brought her 6-month old Buick LeSabre in for an oil change and it got new shocks too.
