hey i cut myself about 3-4 hours ago on the

elbow pretty good one pic in library

im getting conflicting info some are telling me to go to ER

some so just go to the DR within 72 hrs to get a tetnis shot

now all those advising me are nurses so is there a Doctor in the house?

Its not bleeding anymore, arms not cold or chills or anything no lose of movement or pain

other then a minor pain to let me know i did hurt myself but faint and comes and goes

but other wise i feel fine.

Honestly, I'm no doctor, but if it doesn't hurt you and it stays shut, you're fine. I had a nasty slice on my knee and didn't want to go, but everytime I moved my leg it opened and wouldn't heal. So I went and got stitches. As for a tetanus shot, well it's a good idea no matter how you look at it. Go ahead and get one when you get a chance. If it's been over 10 years, get it ASAP.

If you are concerned about it opening and you wait too long, they won't stitch it. Instead they'll put butterfly strips on it and you can get those at your local drug store. They are incredibly strong strips with medical adhesive, usually made by 3M. They'll keep it closed long enough to heal.

Hope this helps.

Dan, Im no md but at the VERY least, jam down to Longs or something and see if you can pick up a butterfly stich or two. its deep enough that you really ought to help it close up man. Like I said, no pro but I wouldnt take a chance on something like that, that's a pretty good scrape buddy. Your call but you got to at least dress it, and because Im about as accident prone as they get, I would image, within several hrs, the throbbing pain could come back, if that happens, you'll end up in the ER anyway, not because of the pain but because your body is reacting to bad stuff and its trying to tell you. good luck Dan, I wouldnt mess around just in case. take care,

Ted

I'm no doctor, but I would have it looked at. It needs to be thoroughly cleansed and perhaps needs some stitches to help speed the healing with minimum scarring. An urgent treatment center should be able to hook you up with proper care. It isn't an emergency, so the ER isn't the proper place to go.

Tetanus probably would only be necessary if you are overdue on your immunizations. Just my opinons, and I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong.

Like the others.... I am no doctor.

If you are due for a Tetnis shot then you MUST get one. It is one of those things we tend to put off as it last for 10 years and then we forget about it.

Tetnis issue can be VERY BAD when not protected for it.

If it is deep, you will need stitches or at least butter fly type band aids on it.

Dammit Jim, I'm a Sport Trac owner, not a doctor!

(Apologies to the late DeForest Kelley!)

Seriously, though, I'd get that looked at by a professional if I were you.

I cant tell how deep it is. Get a tetnus shot tomorrow. Superglue the wound closed tonight, after cleaning it good. Seriously, I have glued some cuts on myself.

First off, I am not an MD, However I am an EMT (emergency medical technician) You said that it has been over 4 hours since the cut when you posted, and a few hours since then now. It is likely too late to have the cut the stitched. Most places will not stitch a cut over 2-3 hours old. Reason being is because the cut as already begun it's healing process and adding stitches will only complicate this and is just plain not worth the hassel if the wound is already closing on it's own and it is no longer bleeding. You didn't post what you cut your elobow but I assume it was dirty or rusty metal if you are concerned about a tetnus shot. If you are due for a tetnus shot then by all means go get one. If you have had a recent tetnus, and the wound is already closing, just keep the wound clean and change the dressing at least once daily. You can use any kind of antibiotic salve like Niosporin or other simular ointment under the dressing. I also personally like to leave the wound uncovered for a couple hours a day if feasable to let the air get to it. It has to me seamed to speed the healing process.

Not MD but ~GM~ and a pro mom! :) Saw the pic, I think it needs a few stitches, but clean it good, as the others have said. Absolutely get the tetnus shot if you have not had one in a while. Get some butterfly bandaids and neosporin. Watch for swelling and redness. If you did not go right away, the doc may not want to stitch it up. *Always* best to let a doc take a look at something like that, as mikeingrandprarie stated, it's a deep wide cut. How in the world did you get the cut?

Apparently, illegal has passed out from loss of blood or is in the hospital with an infection, since he is unresponsive. I doubt an MD will reply here due to the possibility of a malpractice suit.
