This is why if I don't do my own work, I'm watching the techs like a hawk.

A few years ago, I had a oil change on my 99 Ranger at Jiffy lube. It cost them $850.00. They cracked my oil pan. Ford had to remove the engine to replace the oil pan. Never been back to Jiffy since.

That is why I prefer to skin my knuckles doing any and all maintenance on my vehicles. I know the work was done and it was done right.

Grease Monkey oil change in Fort Wayne used a pipe wrench on my drain plug years ago.

Jiffy Lube pulled out my air filter and wiper blades and tried to sell me new ones after I told them up front I didn't need new ones and not to mess with them. Then they poked a hole in the element when reinstalling the filter.

Pennzoil Oil Change said my rear axle fluid needed changing every 6,000 miles or my warranty would be void per the manufacturer.

I WILL NEVER TAKE MY VEHICLES TO A QUICK LUBE PLACE. THEY ARE ALL INCOMPETENT CROOKS.

I took my trac for its first filter change to jiffy lube and after I got it back I noticed it was running alittle rough and so I popped open my hood and noticed they left the damn breather tube that hooks up to the intake tube off. Complete idiots. After that I learned how to do everything myself (within my knowledge anyway).

If you think only Jiffy Lube can scam you, you are in for some real disappointments later in life :D

If an owner/manger of any business is crooked, encourages his employees to cheat customers, or sets up an atmosphere where he looks away or ignores business ethics, that business will scam you if they can.

I do my own services but I have used Jiffy in the past for quick oil changes( if I'm feeling Lazy). Never Again! *******s!Thanks for the info EvanP. This is why I love this website.

ALL fast lubes "Force" the employees to up sell additional services, PERIOD!!

Thus people find ways to sell stuff and keep car counts up and make the corporate office happy... If it means screwing customers, then thats the way it gets done, or get FIRED !!!

Even if you don't get a commission on the sale, then you must run a "ticket" average and keep that over a certain dollar point.....

The fast lube business sucks....

I was a manager of a million dollar store for 3 years.

If I was the customer and could prove that they intentionally stiffed me it would cost them BIG TIME. I could see where someone with a bad temper may do serious bodily harm to the crooks.

I get a lot of work done at our local Kwik-Kar lube center and I will have to say that they appear to be very honest. They only tried to sell me a new air filter once. I knew it needed replacing and I even had purchased a new K&N filter, but had not installed it yet. After I installed the K&N they never tried to sell me a new air filter, or any other service that I knew I never needed.

I am allowed to go into the work bays, and was present and watching both transmission flushes they did on both of my Sport Tracs. I talked with the service manager when he was doing my transmission flush and he appears to be knowledgable and competent and I have never seen anywone push unneeded products or services on anyone. My only gripe is that when I first went to get tranny flush they tried to say that they could not get to it for several hours. I later found out that the service manager is the only guy allowed to do the tranny flushes, and he was not there when I showed up the first time.

The shop is owned by a woman who lives in our community and if they were ripping people off, the word would be out fairly quickly. Even the local police take their cars there for service.

PS: I am not vouching for all Kwik-Kar Lube shops, I just feel that the this one in my home town does honest dependable work at a very reasonable price. I'm sure there are Jiffy Lubes, and other lube centers that do honest work, but there are many like Todd said that are pushed to sell more products and services regardless whether the customer really needs them or not.

I have used them for maintenance I can't perform, like tranny service. Each time I've done that, I've stayed in the bay chatting with the mechanic. I really had no desire to talk to them, it was all a ruse to stay out there and make sure they actually did change my tranny fluid. No problems at all.

I've got plenty pof stories about them too. I was called by family members to meet them at jiffy lubes to repair problems that jiffy lube made during oil changes. stripping oil drain plugs and just jamming it back in there and letting them drive away leaking, cross threaded oil filters also leaking, couldnt get the filter off then got their oil filter wrentch jammed on it and and couldnt get that off either. I had to go into their pit and show their guy how to do it correctly. A bunch of scamming, lying, cheating morons. I would never go to one and I steer as many people away from them as I can!

JohnnyB,

I guess we can all rest easy now that you trained all the Jiffy Lube techs, there should be no more problems with them.

Actually, I have had dealers strip my oil pan drain plug on several occasions. My Honda got stripped twice. The dealer gave me my first oil change free and stripped the drain plug. A few years later a local privately owned lube center stripped the drain plug again and also crushed the nylon washer. They paid to have the drain plug drilled, threaded and an oversized plug installed.

The Pontiac dealer gave me 4 free oil changes and 4 free car washes when I bought my 1997 Grand Prix and on or about the 2nd or 3rd free oil change they stripped the drain plug.

My point is that a stripped bolt or drain plug can happen to anyone and is not necessarily a sign of incompetence.

Oh boy.... I'll go get the popcorn going for this thread.

I've been changing oil on a wide variety of vehicles and engines over the last 35 years and I have never (knowingly) stripped a drain plug on any of them.
