Gavin,

It has been about 4 hours since I posted and 3 hours since you posted. I hope your popcorn is not getting cold or stale yet. :D

Nope, I ate it all right away. It was pretty good.

This thread reminded me that I need to get another oil drain pan before I change oil the next time. The old one kind of had an accident the last time I used it due to a front wheel running over it coming off the ramps. It lasted about 12 years without incident.

I also just checked the mileages: The Trac has about 3800 miles on its oil change and the Liberty has about 10,000 miles on its (all highway miles for the Liberty). I use Mopbil 1.

I'll probably change the oil over memorial day weekend. Hope I don't strip the threads.

:wacko::wacko::wacko:

No popcorn needed ... Rich can say what he wants, we all have opinions.

I've never stripped a drain plug either, around 22 years for me.

I think I'm going to put a disclaimer at the bottom of my posts like the big corps do at the end of their employees emails. The ones that take up 5 messages worth when they text from their email account to your cell phone. "Disreguard the above post it is only one side of the conversation between the voices in my head".

I agree that posters should be able to post their opinions! Some posters here have strong opinions about certain things, and that is OK too.

I was just playfully giving Rich "the business" here.

Have some more popcorn (and a couple of cold beers to wash it all down!).

My house has never been robbed, yet I still lock the doors. I have never had any type of damage to my house, yet I still keep insurance on it.

I know it was what you have been doing for years, that still doesn't change the fact that you may have, or are, getting ripped off.

When I change a fuel filter, I know it wwas changed. When I change my tranny fluid, I know it has been changed. I don't have to take someones word for it.

For me, the choice to NOT do it myself is one of economics. I lose money when I change my own oil; and I lose money everytime I mow my own lawn.

How do I LOSE money? Why wouldn't I SAVE money by doing it myself? Great questions...I will explain:

It's quite easy! I have my own side-business doing web and e-commerce development. For the past 4 years it has sucked up ALL my free time that I let it...last year I worked almost 1000 hours (that is ON TOP OF my FT job).

My hourly rate for that work is high enough that IF instead of doing that work, I change my oil, I lose money.

Same with mowing my lawn.

However, I LIKE to mow my lawn. It is relaxing, and it's a good way to clear my head, so I DO actually mow my lawn, lose that money I could make, and consider it relaxation therapy.

Now, some would say the same about servicing their vehicle, or performing mods...that they "LIKE" to do it and "ENJOY" doing it, and its more of a hobby. To that, I say "GREAT!"

I did my own mulching this spring, because I know "just" how I like it done, but I paid to have the mulch delivered rather than spend half a day carting it in the ST (we needed 11 yards total). And, I have other home projects to do, that I won't pay someone else to do because I need the exercise, and I would probably lose money (net) if I paid someone else to do them.

I guess what I am saying is this...Just don't get too hard on people who take their cars in for service, even for little things. You may feel they are wasting money; but if they are like me then maybe they have learned how to avoid "stepping over dollars to pick up dimes!"

TJR

You've relied on people building your truck, but you don't rely on them to service it?

The same people that built it are not the ones that will ever service it since a dealer, Jiffy Lube, Grease Monkey, etc is not prt of Ford motor company, but seperate companies.

If you're so paranoid, all you have to do is "Look at the changed oil, see how fresh it is, clear.." and note the oil filter before they change it, then check it again afterwards. Real simple to verify work was done. I can't imagine anyone here not doing their job, it's too easy to discover and no garage here would risk that. None. Zero. Zilch. No chance of anyone here not doing the service they promise.

Of you go through all the work to double check thiers, you might as well done it yourself.

I understand that I could go to work on a saturday making $30.00/hr or Sunday at $40.00/hr I could be saving money by getting my oil changed at Jiffy lube. Then agin, while at work, I am not spending time with the ones that really mater...my loved ones.

Tom

uh...point was you wouldn't take it to Ford either to get it serviced..IOW, you trust no one correct?

I have two hands. Why not use them. You are right, I guess I don't trust anyone. Then again, like others, I have not cross threaded or rouded out my drain plug either.

But if I did, hmmm...2 mins to check their work versus 30-60 mins doing it yourself..yeah, that's a no-brainer!

No wonder you take it somewhere. It has never taken me 30 minutes to change my oil.

Tom

I like to change my own oil and have the satisfaction that it was done correctly and that I used the right oil.

Do you really know what they are putting in your car at the quick lube places? That bulk container in back may have who knows what it it.

I don't care if others love to go to Jiffy Lube, and they don't mind replacing their air filters and wiper blades, and getting their transmissions flushed every 3,000 miles. If they like to spend money to have mindless untrained minimum-wage salespeople crawl all over their car and turning nuts, that is fine with me.

I've had several bad experiences at Jiffy Lubes, Grease Monkeys, Sears, etc. to go back. I even had a Honda dealer and a Ford dealer not change my oil for the first "free" oil change I got with two vehicles I purchased. I made the mark on the filter and the old filter was still on it. Both times they "re-did" the oil changes, but only under my watch and only with my approval of the new filter and the unopened quarts of oil that they used.

Gavin, I hear you, but as others have said, go to the independent lube places, they are RARELY like that; and I hope that the big chains aren't MOSTLY like that, which seems to be your opinion.

That's a good point Q.

I worked at a high-end import shop, and no matter what the car came in for, we'd always give it a good once-over and check for any problems...drive belts, timing belts, brakes, tires, fluids, etc. Occasionally we'd find a part that needed service...most of the time the people would get the service done.

A nice little story...BMWs uses plastic tank'd radiators, they are notorious for breaking down after 100,000 miles. The maintinence manuals won't tell you to replace it, but experienced techs know that it's coming. A guy brings his 745i in for an oil cahnge at about 93,000 miles. Werecommend a new radiator...he declines the service. Brings it back in at about 103,000 miles for an oil change, while on the preliminary test drive, the radiator blew apart on the tech, requiring a quick tow back to the shop. Luckily, nothing more happened to the car, but it ended up costing the guy more then it originally would have.

Going to a good shop not only ensures that you're getting the best for your money, but the collective experience of the shop can help prevent unnessacary headaches and a thinner wallet.

Some of the Jiffy Lube's and other national brand lube centers are privately owned franchises, and some are owned an operated by the corporation, or a subsiderary management company. If you find a lube center that is privately owned, you are more likely to get honest service.

As for the unkown oil in the bulk container?? I use Mobil-1 and they don;t get that in the bulk drums. I watch them take the oil of the shelf and put it in my car. When they did my transmission flush, I watched them take 14 quarts of Penzoil synthetic ATF (Mercon-V compatible), and pump it from the 16 gallon drum into the flush machine, and then watch the entire fluid exchange process.

The Kwik-Kar lube center I go to is a privately owned franchise and they offer both basic oil changes, or full service oilc changes that include checking all fluids, belts, tire pressure etc, and they even wash your windows. If you opt for just the basic oil change, they only change the oil and filter and it's about $12 cheaper.

There are rip-off artist in every business, so by just chaning your oil or doing your own maintenance will only help you avoid the crooked lube centers etc, but there plenty of other crooks in other lines of work that will be glad to take your money. You can avoid them all if you do everything yourself, but that's not practical since most people cannot do everything them self unless they are a hermit living in a cave.
