Awesome! Looks like you're pulling from a really clean donor.

I guarantee this thread is going to be REALLY good. :supercool:

Just backtracked previous posts sorry, 2001 Sport Trac Job 2, and 2000 Explorer. Looking forward to reading it the updates.

Yup, you are correct Chad...

My donor vehicle is extremely clean and has been my daily driver for almost 2 years. I sort of hate using it but I

had gotten it pretty cheap and also got a good deal on the Trac, so it's not too bad. The Explorer has about 135K on it now and runs great so I prefer to use a known good drive train rather than spending $1000 to $1500 for a wrecked donor that I know nothing about. Hopefully I can sell the body of my Explorer to someone for a decent price when I'm done.

My ultimate plan is to get the swap done and work out all the kinks if there are any, then start stockpiling parts and saving up for a little bit and pulling the V8 again for a rebuild and possible 347 stroker kit. I'm also waiting to see how the V8 feels with the 4.10 gears and stock height tires compared to the 3.55's and slightly oversized tires that I've been running.

The ST motor has a blown head gasket at a minimum, but could likely be rebuilt. I'll probably offer the Explorer along with the ST motor and tranny if someone wanted to rebuild and reinstall it. If I don't get any bites on selling them as is then I may consider doing the rebuild myself, but I've got so many projects going on now I just don't know if it's worth my time.

Wasnt there something abiut using a mercury instead due to the dam Pats system? Or can that be bypassed now?

Great work, Please keep us posted !!!

I'm honestly not sure what's going to be required with the PATS system just yet... I'm pretty certain they can be completely turned off by the dealer, and possibly even by a tuner. The best thread I've found with info on this swap so far never mentioned anything about the PATS system, so I'm hoping there's a chance that I won't have to do anything at all.

Since I'm here, a quick update....A bit more was done last week but the weekend got busy with the kids and wife, and I've been in New York all this week with work, so nothing happened this week. However, the donor motor is just about ready to be pulled from the Explorer... Everything is disconnected, the upper intake and front accessories have all been removed, I just need to remove the transmission cross member and lift it out. I'm flying home tomorrow and it looks like I'll be free all of next week so I'm hoping to get the motor dropped into the ST and start hooking things back up.:driving:

If your using the drivetrain from your Explorer, and the pcm, and engine/trans wiring harness, just grab the pats module, key transponder, and wiring from it as well, and transfer it over to the Sport Trac and you should be fine, people run into pats issues when they don't have the pats components from the donor vehicle or the original key, so they are left with either tuning it out or having to have pats reprogrammed to work.

Also your theft light will no longer blink with the Explorer Pats, because Pats B, and Pats E are wired differently to the theft light. I believe Pats E sends a negative pulse, where Pats B uses a positive signal anyways there is a way to fix that as well.

Also rewiring from Pats E to Pats B

Unfortunately, no... wound up unexpectedly having to work last week, then got too busy with the kids, wife and other random house projects that needed done. Packing the motorcycle up today for a 2000 mile trip to Illinois and back that starts tomorrow to see the in-laws and friends, so it's gonna be awhile before I get back on it. Thanks for the PATS info though! I'll be sure to update when I have more completed.

Well, after a far too long hiatus, I got back to work on the motor swap last week. I got the donor motor pulled and dropped into the Sport Trac, and as expected, everything lined up and bolted in like it was meant to be there! There's still some miscellaneous hookups to do, and I haven't had time to take pictures of everything as I go, but I'm keeping a list of anything that I have to modify or swap over from the donor to help people compile a list if they decide to attempt this swap. I've been in Massachusetts this week visiting family, but hopefully I'll be able to try and fire the truck up for the first time this weekend when we get home. If I don't get to it this weekend, then it'll be another 2 weeks before I do as I have to leave out Sunday afternoon for 2 weeks of work in Kentucky.

Here's the list thus far of what I've had to re-use from the donor or modify:

-Heater hoses

-Radiator hoses

-Power steering cooler (ST cooler sits up too high and hits the oil pan)

-Power steering lines

-Cruise control module and cable

-Throttle cable

-Rubber engine/trans mounts (I replaced with new parts since the motor was already out)

-ECU

-Alternator harness fusible links and fuse box connector from 4.0 get spliced onto 5.0 harness

-Explorer driveshaft front yoke got put onto ST driveshaft

-ST driveshaft will fit temporarily, but I'd like it to be about 2 inches longer to engage more of the output shaft, so I'm looking into a different donor shaft or modifying this one

As for the PATS system, I had Torrie send me a tune with PATS disabled last week. Once I get the truck running, I'll probably just take it to the dealer and have all the PATS codes cleared so that I can then program the ST keys to it and have it turned back on in the tune.
