With Dale's advice, I went to the repair forum and snooped around, and got the gumption to try something. I remembered that I heard a crack sound when the power supply plug was hit on the side. So, I decided to check the solder joint under the DC socket. Since I've repaired hundreds of TVs, it couldn't hurt because it was already dead. It was a major dis-assembly to get to see under the mother board. It didn't look bad, but I re-soldered the pins under the plug anyway. As I was soldering I noticed that there was not enough solder around each pin, so I finished them correctly and put it all back together. Here I am, sending this post from my laptop! Thanks Dale for giving me a push in the right direction.

Your welcome! Glad to be of assistance. That's one of the great things about this board. Somebody here usually knows something about what you need to know.

Happy trails...

This is an ongoing issue with my Toshiba. The power jack has a bad connection to the board and Toshiba wants $400 to fix (install a new mobo). I've been inside and resoldered 4 times already. The work around for my is to solder a pigtail from the mobo through the back grill and solder another jack externally. This relieves tension that is placed on the jack connected to the board by connecting the power supply to a floating jack.

At first I was reluctant to open the laptop up but it was broken anyway so I did it. Now I can tear it down completely in about 5 minutes. Glad you got your fixed Gary. Repair shops are making a fortune on issues like this.

When my VAIO was brand new, I dropped it with the wireless card sticking out and it drove it clear inside. Figuring I had nothing to lose, I struggled through all the screws and took it apart, took out all the loose pieces, replugged in the fan that had come undone, and put it back together. Got a USB wireless adapter and the laptop is still in use 5 years later by DD. Sony wanted 700. for a new mother board.... :)

It was good experience though, I have a new HP and when I just upgraded the ram, one of the simms was under the keyboard..... no sweat taking it apart.... would have cost $$ for a shop to do it.
