There's a small puddle of oil on the garage floor under the transfer case of my 2001 4X4 Job1, which has only 45k miles.

The local Firestone shop put it on a lift and said that the front seal was weeping, and they said that replacing it would require removing the entire transfer case with a total cost of over $600.

Elsewhere in this forum I found that replacing the rear seal is easier - just remove the driveshaft and a yoke:

Does anybody know if this is true, that replacing the front seal is a bigger job?

If It's just weeping, there are additives that you can get that will swell the rubber in seals and stop the leaks. Check with your local parts store.:supercool:

Please do not put any kind of snake oil stop leak treatment in anything...worst thing you can do for a vehicle and very poor advice to be giving someone.

WIth that said there is a big difference between the t-case input seal and output seals. For an input seal you would have to remove the t-case to replace it, on a output seal all you do is remove the driveshaft, front or rear, remove the flange and replace the seal....2 very different jobs.
