I bought a new T.V. and a reciever and an x-box that I need to make work.

I was able to get some radio stations but can't get the x-box to work.

I want the x-box to run through the surround system and the t.v. to run through also.

So how do I use the hdmi inputs and outputs to make this happen. And or the good old rca jacks?

I thought I was up to the challenge but the instructions arent written detailed enough for this man anymore. And I refuse to ask my ten and eleven year old how to make it work.

thanks

First off, is the Receiver an A/V type? If so, run the Xbox to an input on the receiver. Use an HDMI if the xbox has one, if not, use the composite RCA jacks. On the receiver, look for monitor out, that's the one that sends the picture to the TV. Hook it up to an HDMI input on the TV. iF YOU USE THE RCAs, the receiver will have to be an up converting type. That is, composite to HDMI upgrading. You can also take audio from the TV output to another input on the receiver, such as TV/DBS, but you might have a cable box there already. If you want, you can email me and get my phone number and I can explain better.

I re-read your post and see that it's a surround receiver. You might have to assign inputs to make things work right.

This link will help.

It mentions two different ways to do the Xbox. one of which is an optical cable. If you are nat familar with tis cable, it uses optics and will have a red light coming from the end of it. It is the better of the way of the two options, butif you don;t have the cable right now, then go with the other method for now..

This link is a bit more simple with the same end result..

Here is the text from the link,

How to hook up your Xbox to a Dolby Digital Decoder

Xbox is the first and only game console to support in-game Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound. This lets you experience all the game sounds from your home theater system in full 5.1 surround.

Before you get started, make sure you've got the following:

A digital audio output.

A free optical digital input on your receiver.

An optical digital audio cable.

Digital Audio Output

Your Xbox didn't come standard with a digital audio output, but you're gonna need one for this to work, so hightail it to the store for the Advanced AV Pack or High Definition AV Pack, both of which have digital audio outputs. Microsoft makes both of them. You can also buy third-party AV cables for Xboxbut make sure they have a digital audio output.

Free Optical Digital Input

For this slammin' sound system to work properly, you need at least one free optical digital input on your receiver.

Ready to Hook It Up? Let's Go!

1.Connect the digital audio output to your Xbox.

2.Connect one end of the optical digital audio cable to the digital audio output on your Xbox and the other end to the optical digital input on your receiver.

3.Turn on your Xbox with no disc in the disc drive.

4.In the Xbox Dashboard, select Settings.

5.Select Audio.

6.You will see an Audio Mode screen that shows Dolby Digital and DTS status. Select Dolby Digital.

7.You will see the question "Does your stereo system support Dolby Digital Audio?" Select Yes.

8.You will see Dolby Digital Enabled in the audio screen.

Your Xbox is now ready for Dolby Digital gameplay. Insert a game disc and play!

I called xbox and they couldn't get it to work either.

Thanks reaper but I went to bestbuy first thing today.

I took the instruction books with me and the guy I found opend the book to the

receiver and labled the HDMI ports with xbox, and tv. Plus he had me add an

optical cable.

Came home and plugged it all in and it worked just great.

Getting used to multiple remotes will take some time.

Thanks again for the replies
