My wife wants to buy two MP3's for our daughters for Christmas.

As I fly every day I get to see the hottest trends out there. It seems that the Apple I-Pods are the thing.

What are your views of the small unit they make. I think they are called "Mini's" or something like that.

Thanks in advance...

The iPods are the greatest thing since corn in a can. I have two of 'em! If you want more info on 'em, apple's website has all you could possibly ever want to know.

The iPod has the "standard" size, and the "nano". My only concern with the nano is that they don't hold a LOT of songs. I like to carry a ton of music around with me and the standard ipod makes that really easy. I think you might be considering the nano though. I'll post a link to apple's iPod website so you can look at both of 'em:

Check the forums.

With the number of accessories and toys available for the iPod, I'd be really hard pressed to buy any other brand of MP3 player.

The Nano is definitely the must have model right now. 4 gigs flash ram. (No hard drive to break) and a very svelte form factor.

Do not buy the mini. They still might have some left over at places that sell them. But I am pretty sure that they stopped making them. If they have a lot of music go for the new Ipod that has either 30G or 60G I think. That can play movies/video and store pictures on it. The movie thing might be good for kids so they can be entertained on long trips. If that is too expensive or just dont need that much space then go for the Nano.

I have the 30G iPod and it is by far the best investment ever. I use it everyday at work and I have the iPod adaptor for my headunit so no more cd's to change. I only have 600 songs on it and its only at 1.5G filled.

The mini is still being sold, and is perfect for most people. The 4 GB version should hold 1000+ songs. The only thing to remember with it is that you should buy some sort of case for it that protects the front screen (as many people have had issues with it getting scratched).

I have a 3rd generation iPod (30 GB) and I love it. I bought an Alpine headunit for the Trac with a module that my iPod plugs into. The headunit treats the iPod like a disc changer and lets me scroll through songs & such. Perfect.

iPod Shuffles SUCK. You have to use their proprietary software to load music onto them and the software is very finicky. My wife owns a 1GB iPod Shuffle and sometimes it works, sometimes it don't. Can't tell you how many device upgrades I've loaded and how many times I've uninstalled and reinstalled the iMusic software in order to keep it working.

On the other hand, my Creative Muvo 256mb player doesn't need any software to work. You just snap it in like any USB drive, drag and drop MP3 files to it in the File Manager. Couldn't be simpler.

I bought an itrip but i sounds staticy and i tried using it throgh the tape deck but i had to turn it up all the way, and sounded fuzzy. I also heard you can buy a cord from radioshack for like 10 bucks that hooks from you Ipod to the back of the cd deck, is thta possible?

Got my 12yo son an iPod Nano for Christmas...the 4GB model. It cost around $250 and for just a little over that price you can get the video iPod with more storage, be he wanted the Nano. Was all set to get him an iPod Mini, but then the Nano came out.

One thing about the Nano is it is small. Really small. I suggest getting the lanyard headphones so it can be worn almost like a necklace as most kids these days don't have shirt pockets. Also, I suggest getting some type of protector because the #1 complaint about the Nanos is the face, especially the lcd window scratches easily. Look on eBay there are tons of covers, and even pre-cut protectors called iCondoms. I got my son both...iCondoms for the front and back, and a case/cover for it to slip into (these are also called Nanotubes).

Lastly, if you order the Nano NOW from www.apple.com, you can still get it delivered in time for Christmas, with free ingraving.

Oh, and the Nano like all other iPods use internal rechargeable batteries, so you may want the wall power adapter if you don't want to recharge from the USB port of a computer all the time...that, and the laynard headphones were the only two accessories I bought.

My rub with the iPod is the irreplaceable battery. If they'd use a replaceable Lithium Ion or something...I'd bite. I can't see dropping $300 bones for something I need to risk destroying when the battery life winds down.

You can say it...I am a cheap *******.

I was so frickin' pissed when my Ipaq battery died. Now they all come with replaceable batteries.

dude, u cant go wrong w/the ipod.....i have had the 3rd gen 40 gig for a full year now....no problems seamless w/ my pioneer head unit in my trac. The nanos are great for the price, the only problem i have heard them haveing is the screens cracking, i guess people forgetting they are in their pockets or something. Anyway, all the other mp3 players out there are inferior to the ipod, i wouldnt have anything else! Just my opinion however...:D

As far as I know the batteries in all iPods (with the exception of the Shuffle) can be replaced. Sure Apple had some woes with battery life with the first generation iPods but they have been remedied.

I have a silver iPod Mini that I bought about a year ago to replace my first gen 5 gig. I love the Mini and find that the 4 gig capacity is enough for me. Sure I have about 10 gigs of music but I never need all of it with me all of the time but it's different for everyone.

My first gen 5 gig had a hard drive failure about a year ago. Sure I was a little pissed at the time but if I wanted I could revive it. I can get a higher capacity battery installed as well as up to a 20 gig hard drive at http://ipod.techrestore.com/

I may consider doing that some day but for now my Mini rocks. It accents my 12 in PowerBook quite nicely.
