Hi; Can anyone here tell me the procedure to program in a new key. The Ford dealer here says that they have to take the Sport trac in to program a new key. ( Wife lost her key )

They want $75 for a new key and to program it in.

If you only have one key, then the computer must have all the key codes erased from the computer and the surviving key and at least one new key will have to be reprogrammed. If you have at least two working keys in your possession, it is relatively easy to add more.

To add keys, I always tell my customers to get in the vehicle, buckle their seatbelt, and then put either one of two working keys in the ignition and turn it to the RUN position, wait for the THEFT light to go out, then turn the key off and set it aside. Repeat with the second working key. Put the new key in, turn it to RUN, wait for the THEFT light to go out, turn the key off, and then the vehicle should start. This process works with 99% of all Ford vehicles with the PATS system.

Actually, from what I've seen on this board, $75 for a new key programmed in when you only have one is not a bad price. But check with a local locksmith as well. Some of them can also program the electronic PATS keys.

What ever you do, when you get the replacement, buy a third blank and do it yourself. This way you will have a second key if it happens again...

Yeah, Coastie. Whenever I counsel someone about getting replacement keys, I suggest they buy as many as they can afford. We charge the same rate for programming regardless how many keys are cut. Plus the cost of the keys themselves, of course.

I've always had a third key in case I lose one. The first purchase I made after I bought my trac was a third key. That way, if you lose one, you can re-program it yourself without paying an arm and a leg at the dealership. You require 2 programmed keys in order to program a third key.

Gordon, see what it will cost just to reprogram a key, that may be a key cut and reprogram. contact LaRue via email and see what he says to do, he can cut the new keys for you._Ron

one key inside truck, one key in a magnetic hidden key box (just to open the door, if you don't have keyless entry.)

and don't any one go looking around my truck ...you will get hurt! LOL

email LaRue, moose hunter ..maybe he could help you... maybe she will find it missing one soon!
