I just got a notice in the mail that I can get the 2013 Maps update for $199. I'll probably pass since I don't rely on it a lot. One new addition is speed limits on highways other than interstates, but on my system, the speed limit only works when you have a destination entered.

Part of my angst on updating, too, is that Ford has abandoned Sync updates for my system. Nothing new in 3 years. So on principle, I have issues with giving them more money. Some of my issues got better when I dumped Apple and got a Samsung Galaxy S3, though. But an update is needed. 3 years? That's forever in communication technology.

I hate the sync.... a $199 aftermarket radio will out perform the sync and has way more features, Jsut instyalled one in my 03.... I am considering ripping out the one in my 2010...

Ford sdropped the ball on this too..... Dont know how the new systems are but the earlier ones are JUNK !

Agree 100%....I have Ford sync in my 2012 Ex and an outdated Pioneer avic d-3 in my '03 Trac. Pioneer alot more user friendly and has more features...like ipod hookup, DVD, home screen (digital tach, clock, volt meter, etc). GPS updates are still avail @ approx. $200 but I'm still using 2008 CD. At least Ford went down from 2K for my '07 Trac Navi to $750 for my '12......

If there's an aftermarket radio with Sync-like voice control for media playback please let me know as I'll be on it like white on rice. Right now I'm using apps on my phone and they don't really measure up.

IMO the $199 map upgrade isn't worth it. It is out of date before it even arrives, but I'm sure you know that already.

I have a cheap 4.3" screen Tom Tom that I paid about $100 and it came with Free maps for life. About every quarter they have updates and every year they have a completely new replacement map version. Maps are about a 100MB dowload, so It takes about 30-45 minutes to download and install the new maps and any new software updates, but you can just start the down load and go do something else. You can also backup your GPS, settings and stored map locations.

Tom Tom has shown the speed limits on most major highways and interstates for several years now and they even let you set an audible alarm to warn you if you exceed the posted speed limit by more than 3 MPH. They also map and alert you to known Red Light cameras.

None of these features requires you to enter a route or destination.

Tom Tom also has an optional separate antenna for picking up traffic info that will help route you around traffic congestion...when possible.
