Ok, my wife called me at work and said that our computer at home won't connect to the internet. She said the same thing last night and when I got home, I looked over the connections and turned the computer on and it had no problem hooking up. Now she says it's doing the same thing. She says it's telling her that the user name isn't being recognised on the server. I talked her to the "log in screen" (it's set up to hook up when the computer is turned on) and all the info to log in is correct. I had her shut the modem off and turn it back on and it didn't help. Now the question I have is, does anyone have any ideas of what I should look for when I get home and it is still having this problem? Thanks for any input.;)

I use Comcast Cable modem and occasionally it will do that. They told me to unplug the power supply to the modem and leave it off for a few minutes and when I hook it back up it works. You can also click on your Internet connection Icon and tell it to repair the connection. That also works if it has lost its DNS number.

Hope this Helps

Thanks Don. Funny thing is, I got home tonight and it hooked right up as it always did. This is two nights in a row that she had problems and i get home and it's fine. I'm baffled.

are all the lights on the modem on when it doesn't connect?? if not comcast may be working in your area causing the outage.. i would call comcast when it doesn't work..

Unplugging a modem usually does the job. Simply turning it off and on does not. For whatever reason they do that every now and then. By unplugging the power supply, it resets the modem.

Thanks for the replies and I'll try to answer the few that postsed after I was off-line.

TroY, all the lights are on as they are sopposed to be. That was my first question to her. All green lights and none flashing. It's through Verizon, so I asked her if she happened to be on the phone when it was starting up (thinking one of the filters may have gone bad) and the answer was no. She turned the computer on and then got onto the Treadmill and was on it for about 25 min. It never hooked up in those 25min. I get home and everything was normal. When I got on today (to check posts here), no problem.

Coastie, we don't have an "on/off" switch on our modem. To shut it off you have to unplug it. Sorry, I wasn't clear with that. I usually unplug it for about 5 min. every other month, just to clear it out.;)

How long have you had this modem (Verizon...DSL?)? When the broadband modem start getting age on them, they will start acting up this way. Another way to test when the problem is (if you can't seem to get a connection), is to ping the verizon server and see if you get a response. That will tell you if you are connected to their network (and not being able to use it) or if your modem is just not connecting at all.

If it is DSL, you can also have the problem that the bandwidth of the phone line is just slightly above the minimum requirements for the internet service and changes in traffic, weather, etc. will cause it to drop below the threshhold and limit service. This makes sense if it doesn't work in the middle of the day (when traffic is highest) and works other times. Only a line tech can tell you if this is the case.

I have Verizon DSL at home and work both. Had problems at home over the weekend and at work yesterday. I unplugged the modem power source also, that didn't work the first time, tried it again and then after it powered up I hit the Reset button on the back of the modem with a pen for 10 seconds, then rebooted the computer. After all that it worked.

Stone, when you boot up the PC, do you and your wife have seperate accounts that you log into? When you get home do you log into the PC with your acct and then onto the internet fine, but when she boots up and logs in the internet is not available? I've had problems with machines before with multiple accounts on them. One account would connect no problem to the internet but another account could not. Just for clarification, I mean logon accts to the pc, not to the internet.

jlevin, no, we have no seperate profiles.

eledhel, have had the modem for about 5 years. I do kow that a few years ago my other computer was having problems that I thought were Verizon's fault and I had a tech check the bandwidth of the line. He had never seen a reading as high as he said showed up on mine. It could be trafic though. We'll see.

Thanks again for the replies. I appreciate it.;)
