The problem is that the membrane in between the brake fluid and the hot wire in the switch wears out over time and break fluid comes in contact with the wire causing a fire.

The switch is not a ford part. It is off the shelf from a supplier...

Quit yor bitchen about ford and buy a chevy. It will rattle in 11 months..

Fast Eddie-

The blame is still on Ford's behalf, as it rightfully should be.

Ford picks what parts go on the vehicle. They choose the suppliers. They choose the applications and uses. Ford should test these components to make sure they meet their standards. Perhaps the switch did meet standards. If that's the case, perhaps the standards to too lenient in the quality of parts and needs to be upped. Perhaps Ford was shooting for a price point and this switch meet that point, while another, more expensive switch with a better design, did not.

Bottom line is this, regardless of where the switch came from, Ford chose it for a reason, and Ford now has the responsibility of fixing it.

I'd take rattles over a burning truck any day.

Does the switch overheat only when the cruise control is engaged?

I rarely use CC and I note on the NHTSA site there will be no parts available until October.

The interim fix is to disconnect the wires until the new parts come in.

fkent,

The switch is always "hot", not just when the CC is engaged. Some of the F-150 fires occurred in people's garages.

Might not be a bad idea to install a "smoke detector" in the garage and keep a fire ext handy if you own one of these Fords :)

BTW.....enjoyed reading all the posts on what FORD stands for :)
