New side mirror?

Anybody know if I can just pop off the plastic part in the passenger side mirror? I broke the mirror but the mount is still fine, I ordered a new glass mirror piece but the plastic part that pops in is all busted up and I need a new one.

I belive that the mirror comes mounted in the plastic mount. In the service manual, It is shown as one full piece. There are two mounting hooks that you access from the outside of the mirror that release the assembly

I used to own a '91 Escort......parked it at the airport and when I returned someone had stolen both outside mirrors.....just the mirror part.



Ford wanted 175 each...whole assy, since they said they didn't carry just the mirror part for that year. These were the electric type.



I went online to one of those wrecker finding sites and was able to buy the entire mirror assy for just 15 bucks each. I got about 10 emails from various wreckers across the country and picked the best price.

Is the mounting surface bad enough that it wont hold, just a new mirror glass? You buy those at parts stores..
