What do we do after April and XP is no longer supported? Are there any inexpensive ways to get Windows 7? I don't have many dollars for this.

Ed,

While you will eventually have to upgrade to a newer version of Windows, Your computer will not die because Microsoft stopped supporting Windows XP. Your computer will continue to run you just will no longer get any updates, patches, or service packs...but sometimes that's a good thing? Sometimes Microsoft updates mess up things on your PC that were working fine before.

Save your money and face the fact that you will have to update your operating system. If your computer is that old, you might look at upgrading to a new PC and get all the latest technology along with an upgraded operating system.

Window-7 has been reliable and is a good choice if you want to save money and just upgrade the operating system. Windows-8 appears to be pretty good, but may not be worth the price on an old PC since the old hardware cannot take advantage of the new features in Windows-8. Also, there is a much bigger learning curve with Windows-8 than with previous versions of Windows since Windows-95.

I have a version of Windows-8 that bought over a year ago and never installed it. My plan was to install it on my NetBook PC and see how I liked it before I switched over to my main PC. The main feature of Windows-8 is that it supports touch-screens so if you have a touch screen, it can function a bit like a tablet PC...but have the option to use a mouse or tap the screen.

Thanks Rich, I get that the pc will continue but I understand that it will be more subject to malware. I don't know how good Norton will be. Cash is tight this Spring. Maybe there will be more in the summer.

God bless. Ed

Im using XP right now. Last year I got a mid-range powerful 17" Accer laptop, with W/7. Office max marked it down from $680 to $411 delivered to my door.

I have been procrastinating. All I have done is charged the battery and booted it, to see if it would. I shut it down. Im going to have to pull it out soon to set it up...:bwahaha:

Just that this XP machine wont die....LOL. Does everything I need...LOL

Ed,

If you decide to upgrade your Windows XP PC to Windows 8, Microsoft requires that you to first upgrade to Windows 8, and then provides a free upgrade to Windows 8.1.

You cannot upgraded XP directly to Windows 8.1

You will no longer get an security updates for XP, so you will need to download free Anti-Virus software like AVG to keep your PC safe until you are ready to upgrade.

Does Microsoft sell Windows 7 on their website? Another option might be going to your computer manufacturer of choice's website and see if they have refurbished computers with Windows 7. Or check WalMart.com. They sell factory refurbished computers. The office supply stores might sell them on their websites, too. I bought a nice Windows 7 Dell desktop with more memory and capacity than I expect to need (don't recall the specs and I'm at work) at my local WalMart a year ago for $500. That included the tower, 23" flat screen monitor, keyboard, mouse, and speakers. That was actually Nov 2012. All the new ones had Windows 8, which I didn't want. $500 isn't my idea of cheap, but for the computer I got, it was. I think I pieced together a similar setup on the Dell website and it would have run around $700-800.

You can buy Window 7 Upgrade for about $70 and it's a straight forward install.

Window 8 is about $120.
