my buddys having a problem with his jag. i let him know how helpful this website is because he is having a difficult time finding jag specialist.

does anyone knows anything about jaguars?

he is having a brake problem. he has to fully step on the brake pedal to stop the car. does anyone know what could be the problem?

any help would be helpful, thank you

My Dad's cousin has 4 Jags. All are problem beasts. That is why he drives his F-150 everywhere. It starts when he turns the key.

With that being said, the brakes should be no different than any other car. Start with bleeding the brakes. If you get no air out of the system, but the new fluid is nice and clean, then I would look at the calipers. Are they working properly? How about the slides? Do they move freely? If so, does he see any leaks? Next thing to check is the brake hoses. The rubber flexable lines. Do they look swolen? Any other leaks from rust or anything? Does it have ABS of any kind? the last possible thing could be the master cylinder or maybe the brake booster.

I do not know much about Jags. they are nice cars when they run, but they are Brittish built with Brittish reliability.

The only worse country that builds cars is France.

Kinda like original escorts huh? And Tom, you know as well as the rest of us that Jag is owned and quality controlled by Ford.

Anyway - a Jags brakes are no different than any other mid level car from the 80s. It is an XJ6, so nothing special. Follow Toms advice and diagnose like any other car.

Actually the later model Jags are quite good. Ford only purchased Jaguar in 1989 and after they tinkered with things, the 1992 and later models are much better for quality and reliability.

An older one is nice for a weekend cruiser but I wouldn't try to use it for a daily driver.

Do note that until this year, the fastest recognized NY-to-LA time was 32:51 by two guys in a 1979 Jaguar XJS (i.e. new) in the 1979 Cannonball race.

the first Escorts were designed in England. Enough said.

You can not fairly say Jaguar was owned by Ford when at that time Jaguar was not owned by Ford. If it wasn;t for Ford, Jaguar would be gone by now.

Can you honestly give me a Brittish owned nameplate that is reliable and is not owned by someone that is not brittish?

Lets see, Land/Range Rover. Owned by Ford. Mini...owned by BMW.

Any others?

MG...do they still even make cars?

I knew that Johnny - just winding Tom up, especially with the Escort crack. Did you know that the sport version of the Escort, in the 60's, was called the Mexico?

Tom,

no, can't think of any. MG used to build Mini after Austin which was part of British Leyland. MG is the group that sold out to BMW.

Biggest problem, besides rust, with most British cars is the electrics - most were by Lucas. We used to call Lucas the Prince of Darkness when I was wrenching in England.

I know the Early Escorts were problematic. Something Ford has never really shook. It is a shame though. The Escort was really a nice car.

Not only did the English cars have trouble with electronics, but just about everything else. Many things like oddball fasteners made it hard to get parts for or to fix.. English Metric is one of them. They require special tools for almost everything. Mechanics could make a fortune working on English cars. There are still a few Brittish car mechanics in my area. They work on the MG's that people keep parked till spring when they need to get it fixed to take out on a sunday drive.

Tom

check for vacuum at the brake booster it sounds like he

isnt getting the power assist.
