Well we finally made it home from Florida. We took the Explorer. The Explorer has over 200,000 miles on it, but runs great.

We drove from Akron, Ohio to Rock Hill, SC on the first day. I would have driven further, but I left right after work (I work 3rd shift now) and drove into the evening and was getting a little tired.

Day two, we went to Port St. Lucie, FL. From there, to Marathon, FL with 2 day trips to Key West. From there, we went to Plant City for two days, then to Daytona Beach for one night. We spent New Years Eve in Atlanta, GA. Spent the last few days in Lexington, KY to visit a friend before going home.

Total fuel used, 181.149 gallons.

Total miles driven, 3643 miles (per our GPS)

Average MPG for the trip?

A whopping 20.11 MPG!

I am very impressed! This was a 2000 Explorer XLT 4x4 with a SOHC 4.0L engine with 205,000 miles.

With as many miles as we drove and as fast as we drove, this was really awesome! Better than we would have expected.

Only mods for the Explorer is the following. Zabtek filter, Motorcraft Plugs, Taylor-Vertex wires, AMSOIL fluids in the engine, tranny, transfer case, and front & rear differentials. We also have 31x10.50-15 LT tires.

That is it. Not sure if the larger tires helped or hurt the mileage, but I don't care.

Over 20 MPG on an SUV with over 200,000 miles.

Glad you are home safe and actually enjoyed the trip...

I did pick up an intestional virus while in Key West. I was so sick, I seriously considered ending the trip and going home. I was out for 3 days and still do not feel 100%. Doctor in Florida said it will take 2 weeks for me to feel normal and maybe even longer for my guts to operate like they should.

I am glad we stuck it out and finished the trip.

Glad you're back Tom. Sounds like you had an interesting time. Those viruses are nasty with all pain and discomfort, the cramping, the pooping and gas. Don't want to eat. Plan your trip by where the bathrooms are. Eat Imodium like M&M's just to stop the pooping. Not to mention how sore your pooper gets from going to the bathroom so much. I had it once and was a pooping machine! Six, seven, eight times a day, I felt like my pooper was draggin' on the ground. Forgot about the hemerriods, oooh boy. What a mess, talk about pooper pain!! Well, glad you're back. In a few weeks, your pooper is gonna be as good as new(kinda like havin' the sewer pipes cleaned out). Feel better and try some of this, "Proffessor Phartpounder's Colon Cleaner". It really works, it'll purge out all those toxins in your pooper and you'll be a new man in no time. Bob :grin:

Glad you had a safe trip. Over 20yrs ago. I had an intestinal flu. I was single and so sick for 4 days. I had to stay at moms house for care. It was over a week before feeling normal.

Wonder what Tom's mileage would have been if he was driving a Highlander?

According to Gary, the gas stations would have paid me for gas because Toyota's are "just that awesome and the residule is out of this world".

Hope you enjoyed Key West again! We were all sick as hell over the vacation. I TOLD my friends my son Zander was sick for our annual Xmas day dinner and we didn't want to risk infecting 30 people, but they said they all had had it - come over anyway. "Typhoid Zander" took out the whole family- we even cancelled going out on New Years for the first time in 16 years. I'm still only 80%...

it is not so much the mileage i am concerned about it but more the safety and reliabilty for his wife and himself.

btw, the mileage would have been much better with the highlander.

Gary, that was the lowest thing you ever said. I would never wish Toyota reliability on your family. Just come out and say it, you want me to die.

Yea, but imagine the embaressment of driving one. I would almost consider killing myself sitting in one of those.
