I got in the habit of cleaning off the gasket surface on the engine. If you do that , it removes the possibility of that happening.

Same here, and a few times I discovered the old gasket still stuck to the mount..and that would always surprise me. I always puncture the old filter to drain the oil, but it's still a mess to remove, and I don't always notice if the gasket came with it as I drop down the filter. I always oil the gasket, but sometimes they stick and pull away.

As to the 5.1 qt jug....A major discount retailer convinced the oil distributors to offer them an exclusive on the 5 qt jugs. For years gallons were readily available anywhere, but they aren't enough for a full change. The 5+ jug is a work around that lets the rest of the aftermarket sell a one jug oil change (for most vehicles anyway).
