Hello St'ers

well after 68000 miles I am going to switch to Royal Purple. been letting the dealer do it for over 6 years now, but moved away so I dont get the free oil changes :O( My question is I am changing the oil and filter so with 5 Quarts still do the job, saw somewhere that the 04 Sport Trac V6 would take 6?????? :driving:

five quarts oil needed with a filter change, not six.

Chances are the dealer used synthetic blend Motorcraft engine oil, Have you kept good track of your gasoline consumption for a comparison with the change to full synthetic?

Thanks that is what I thought....I have not really been tracking mileage in a awhile but b4 I change the oil I run a couple of tanks of gas and see if there is a difference.....thanks again!

Are there any real advantages with going with Royal Purple?

My ST is approaching 65,000 and would like to consider the advantages for durabililty purposes.

Over priced IMO. I might use it if I was racing. Castrol or penzoil syn is cheaper. You can go 10k to 12k with a filter and top off at mid point. JMO of 0ver 40yrs.

Or stay with motorcraft or valvoline syn-blend at 6k changes. Never lost a motor from that.

I agree with Eddie. Almost any syn will do. I have used RP for the last 8 years but only because I had a connection with a guy that worked for RP (it's made locally) and I was paying less than $4 a quart. But my connection is gone and I'm not about to pay over $6 a quart for the stuff.

OK..so I have a question.. I am buying an Adrenalin that has been modified, Dyno'd, & SCT tuned to 93 octane. He has always put Mobil1 Synthetic in it. It has 48k on it now. Should I continue to use that oil? and isnt that about $70 to $80 an oil change?

IMO, catch the sales at advance auto. They offer name brand synthetic and qaulity filters for $27. Stock up and run the syn oil longer than 5k. You will save $$ and not hurt the motor.

I wonder about that myself. There are lots of full-synthetic oils out there. Is there anything that clearly puts Royal Purple (or Red Line) head and shoulders above the rest, aside from the cool color? I doubt it.

When I was younger, a lot of mechanics who had very expensive restoration cars swore by Valvoline. Some chose it only because it was the cheapest, and said that changing oil often is far more important than the brand you use. I'm using Valvoline full synthetic with a shot of Lucas full synthetic additive, and change my oil at least twice a year (I have several cars, and rarely reach 3000 miles on each before 6 months). IMHO the key is to use full synthetic oil first and foremost. If you have the extra money to spend, having purple oil can't hurt, even if it doesn't help.

FYI my '07 has a factory spec of 5W20. I've heard that this was done by the bean counters to add a tiny boost to Ford's CAFE. I use 5W30 to be safe.

When I had my '89 Mustang, I put Mobil 1 into it. I chose Mobil 1 because it was the only one with synthetic and graphite (which made the oil as black as the nastiest used oil you've ever seen). It was supposed to be the best. My 5.0 burned a quart a month, though. I've heard that things like this led to the demise of the old Windsor motor. The newer mod motors are built to tighter tolerances. So far, my '97 to '07 mod motors don't consume any synthetic oil. IIRC Mobil 1 was reformulated, and doesn't offer any significant advantages over other synthetics any more.

A used oil analysis is the only way to know for sure. I never tried RP but of the oils I have sent in to the lab, I got the lowest wear metals numbers with Pennzoil Platinum. Regular Mobil 1 was fine but for whatever reason Mobil 1 Truck & SUV Formula came back awful for wear metals and they recommended I only run it for 3000 miles but by then I already had something else in it anyway.

I have been using Mobil 1 0w-30 Fuel Economy Formula in the Trac for the past year changed every 5000 miles and the UOA came out fine.

UOA's can also find other potential problems, for example if the silcon is high then your air filter isn't doing the job and if they find water or antifreeze in the oil then your head or intake gaskets are on borrowed time. I don't do it at every oil change, but maybe once a year just for kicks or to compare a different oil. Costs about $25.

I used Mobil 1 in my 85 Mustang GT and never burned any.

I still use it in everything I own, the lawn mower uses it up pretty quickly, but it is speced at straight 30 weight. Its all I have at home, though.

Mobil 1 and Amsoil have been around for a long time. I think that either is right for our engines. Royal Purple is superior to all others as far as I have read but not for the price unless you are a long hall trucker. If RP were that great, I would think that some of the high end cars would recommend it.

I have heard that more long haul truckers use Red Line.

IMO RP is being pumped up by NHRA and other racing circuits. Advertisment in the right circles can drive pricing through the sky.

I've been using Mobil1 5w30 in my 02 Trac since it had 500 miles on it, and I change the oil aprox. 3 times a year.

My engine is still happy at 193,000 miles.

I still don't burn any oil that I can see, and I have no engine oil leaks.
